USL CHAMPIONSHIP: Loudoun United FC outlasts Detroit City FC to move into third place in Eastern Conference
LEESBURG, Va. – Loudoun United FC moved to 8-3-1 on the season following a 3-2 win against Detroit City FC Sunday at Segra Field, extending their unbeaten home record in the 2025 season.
Loudoun United rallied back from an early 1-0 deficit to claim the three points and up its total to 25 points in league matches. Loudoun United has a 23-13 scoring edge this season.
“It feels incredible,” said Loudoun United FC coach Ryan Martin. “We want to make this a fortress and a place that teams do not want to come. We want to be a dominating team and we want to go after teams, so for me, I’m incredibly proud of the way the guys continue to compete. Detroit is a very good team, well-coached, very good players, and very good defensively, so to score three goals against them is a huge testament to the guys’ resilience and their ability to respond in tough moments. We know it’s not going to be easy, every match is difficult, but plus three and we keep moving.”
With a slow start to the first half, Detroit City’s Ben Morris opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finding the back of the net with a quick shot off his right foot.
Just as the first half began to wind down, Loudoun United’s Abdellatif Aboukoura broke through Detroit’s defense in the 38th minute, firing a shot into the net and evening the score. As intensity continued to build leading up to halftime, Aboukoura gave Loudoun United a 2-1 lead, following a beautiful cross from Florian Valot in the final minute of stoppage time.
The second half of play started quickly, with Detroit City’s Michael Bryant equalizing the score in the 52nd minute after a quick shot off his right foot.
With a tied game, both teams battled to dominate the field until the 64th minute when Loudoun United’s Kwame Awuah crossed the ball to captain Zach Ryan, who placed a shot into the back of Detroit’s net with a beautiful finish, giving Loudoun United a 3-2 lead.
With under 30 minutes left in the game, Loudoun United held strong and earned yet another victory at home.
“They tested us, and I think we tested ourselves as well,” said Loudoun captain Zach Ryan. “We made it difficult for ourselves in key moments towards the end of the first half and a couple moments where we could have kept the ball and maybe taken the pressure off ourselves. The attitude of the guys to respond to their goal and then their equalizer was remarkable, and I think the belief that we were going to find the next goal needed to get those three points helped us find this victory. It was not easy, they are a good side with a lot of experienced players and quality, but we just stuck together and it worked out, so an absolutely huge outcome, it feels really good.”
The two Eastern Conference contenders will meet again on Oct. 11 at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Mich.
Loudoun United Football Club is heading to Hartford next Friday, June 20, to face off against the Hartford Athletic.
