PHOENIX, Ariz. – There are comebacks in sports.

Then there is the comeback that Detroit City FC compiled Saturday night at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Stadium.

Trailing the host Phoenix Rising late in regulation, Detroit City FC closed with three late unanswered goals in the final three minutes of the second half to steal an USL Championship road win in miracle style, 3-2.

The Le Rouge scored in the 87th, 89th and 90th minutes to be precise after trailing 2-0 late in regulation.

Jeciel Cedeno’s game-winning goal came seconds before stoppage time and capped the late-game comeback for Detroit City FC (3-1-2).

On the game-winner, Jay Chapman centered the ball to an onrushing Cedeno, who uncorked a 20-yard banger into the top left corner of the goal to put the Le Rouge in front for the first time.

Down 2-0 late in regulation, Darren Smith finally got DCFC on the board in the 87th minute.

Rhys Williams slotted a pass near the six yard spot and slipped a into the top right corner to trim the deficit down to 2-1 in the 87th minute and time running down quickly.

It was the foot of Smith once again that netted the equalizer in the 89th minute. Smith scooped up a loose ball near the doorstep and ripped home the close-range shot to tie the game at 2-2.

That set the stage for Cedeno’s heroics one minute later.

Phoenix Rising took a 1-0 advantage in the 42nd minute when Collin Smith headed in a Jearl Margartha cross in the 42nd minute, and the Rising headed into the lockerroom with a 1-0 halftime advantage.

The homesteading Rising extended their lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute. Darius Jackson slotted the ball to the center of the box and Hope Avayevu tapped the ball into the lower right corner.

The Rising couldn’t hold the momentum and withstand DCFC’s comeback for the ages.

The Le Rouge posted a 16-11 overall shots advantage in the contest, including 5-3 with shots on frame. Detroit City goalkeeper Carlos Herrera notched one save to gain the win under the framework for Detroit City, while Tristan Henry picked up two saves for Phoenix (1-3-2).
