RICHMOND, Va. — In a classic "Cupset" atmosphere at City Stadium, the Richmond Kickers (0-2-1) secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over in-state rivals Loudoun United FC on Wednesday night. A 96th-minute strike from substitute Lucca Dourado sent the Kickers through to the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32, marking a historic night for the veteran club.

The win was a defensive masterclass for Richmond, who held their higher-division opponents to just two shots on goal across 102 minutes of high-intensity action.

"We knew we had to stay disciplined and wait for our moment," the club noted following the match. "The backline was immense tonight, and Lucca did exactly what a striker is supposed to do when the game is on the line."

A Defensive Stalemate

For much of the match, the two Virginia sides traded blows in a tactical chess match. Richmond goalkeeper Yann Fillion was the standout performer early, coming off his line in the 34th minute to make a vital diving stop.

The Kickers’ backline was relentless, totaling 24 tackles and 23 clearances on the night. The defensive effort reached its peak in the 91st minute when Loudoun United earned a free kick at the top of the box. After the initial shot hit the wall, Fillion produced a clinical save on the follow-up attempt to keep the sheet clean.

The Breakthrough

With the match seemingly destined for extra time, the Kickers found their "magic moment" in the 6th minute of stoppage time. Hayden Anderson sparked the counter-attack, carrying the ball up the left flank before finding Tarik Pannholzer.

Pannholzer delivered a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Lucca Dourado—who had entered the match in the 70th minute—and the Brazilian forward buried the winner into the back of the net, sparking scenes of jubilation among the Richmond faithful.

Historical Significance

The victory adds another chapter to Richmond's storied history in the nation's oldest soccer tournament:

  • Home Fortress: Richmond is now 31-9-2 all-time at City Stadium in U.S. Open Cup play.

  • Exclusive Club: The Kickers remain the only active professional club outside of MLS to have won a U.S. Open Cup title (1995).

  • Redemption: The result provides a measure of revenge for Richmond, who were eliminated by Loudoun on penalties in the 2024 edition of the tournament.
