GRAND BLANC, Mich. (NSN) — Detroit City FC advanced to the Round of 32 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory over Flint City Bucks on Wednesday night at Don Batchelor Stadium, ending Flint City’s tournament run in the second round.
Alex Dalou scored the lone goal in the 40th minute, breaking a scoreless match with a right-footed strike from outside the box that found the bottom-left corner.
Flint City (USL League Two) opened the match on the front foot, generating early pressure with multiple shots and corner kicks in the first 10 minutes. However, Detroit City FC (USL Championship) settled in as the half progressed, gaining control of possession and creating more consistent attacking opportunities.
Dalou’s goal came after sustained pressure from Detroit, with Tommy Silva helping initiate the buildup down the left flank. Detroit carried a 1-0 lead into halftime and maintained control throughout the second half.
Flint City created a pair of key chances but failed to convert, unable to register a decisive finish. Detroit City’s defense held firm, limiting high-quality opportunities while goalkeeper Carlos Saldana helped secure the clean sheet.
Detroit finished with advantages in shots (13-9), shots on target (4-2), and possession (55%-45%). Flint City had two big chances but failed to capitalize on either opportunity.
With the win, Detroit City FC moves on to the Round of 32 in the U.S. Open Cup, while Flint City Bucks conclude a strong tournament run after advancing past Forward Madison FC in the opening round.
Dalou was named man of the match for his decisive first-half goal.
