DAVIS, Calif. – March was three months ago. But for San Ramon FC, it still has the spirit of March Madness, albeit for another sport.
San Ramon’s madness, magic or whatever you want to call it has ventured onto the soccer pitch.
Fifth-seeded San Ramon FC stunned previously unbeaten FC Davis Friday night, knocking off the Golden Lions 4-2 in The League For Clubs-NorCal Conference Tournament semifinals.
The win makes sure that neither of the top two teams would even reach the NorCal finals. Second-seeded Oakland SC lost the previous weekend in the quarterfinals and now NorCal regular season champion FC Davis has been bounced from the soccer tournament.
San Ramon FC, which finished the regular season 7-3-2 in the NorCalConference and drew the No. 5 seed in the NorCalConference tourney, scored four goals in a game for the second straight week – and both on the road.
San Ramon FC edged Fuego U23 4-3 last weekend in the conference quarterfinals, while San Ramon came back and scored four more goals to stun the top-seed and favorite of the tournament.
FC Davis, which came into the contest with a 12-0-1 record and had blanked Afghan Premier FC 4-0 in its quarterfinals match last weekend, took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. Ryan Hulbert broke free and sent one home for the 1-0 advantage.
That would be the last lead the top-seeded Golden Lions would enjoy on their home field of Playfields Soccer Stadium.
San Ramon’s Nathaniel Carrasco tied the game in the 21st minute and then Carrasco scored again in the 27th minute to put his side up 2-1.
FC Davis was able to level the game in the 32nd minute when Aiden Albertalli put his shot into the back of the net.
In the second half, San Ramon’s defense shut down high-powered FC Davis, which owns a 47-22 scoring edge for 45 minutes plus eight minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game.
Armando Secura scored what proved to be the game-winner for San Ramon FC with a 57th-minute goal. With FC Davis pushing virtually its whole team up to try to net an equalizer late, San Ramon’s Carver Jensen put the final nail in the coffin when he scored at the 90+7 mark to cap the scoring.
FC Davis could not score in the final minute of stoppage time.
San Ramon FC will play in the NorCal Conference Tournament finals next weekend against the winner of the June 28 semifinals match between No. 7 Yuba FC and No. 3 Napa Valley 1839 FC. The NorCal finals will be played the weekend of July 12-13 at a date, site and time to be determined.
