Elk Rapids Aims to Build on State Runner-Up Finish in 2025

Plainwell targets Wolverine repeat — and a longer postseason run

PLAINWELL, Mich. — Fresh off a 13-4-3 campaign and an unbeaten 6-0-1 march to the Wolverine Conference title, Plainwell enters 2025 intent on defending its crown and pushing deeper in the Division 2 bracket after last year’s district-semifinal exit to Grand Rapids Christian, a eventual state semifinalist.

“We’re excited about the season ahead with a solid core of returning players and several talented newcomers joining the roster,” head coach Ryan Beauregard said.

“Our team is focused on building off last year’s success by defending our conference championship and making a strong push in the postseason. The combination of experience and fresh energy gives us high expectations for what this group can accomplish.”

Returning core

Senior forward Kegan Braybrooks spearheads the attack, with senior midfielder Nate Launt driving the tempo through the middle. Junior Niko Oberhill offers two-way quality in midfield, while senior Gavyn Steele anchors a back line that helped Plainwell control games in conference play.

Depth and competition

Beauregard’s defensive options are deep, with seniors Nolan Lindsey, Landon Jepsen, and Davis Nooney joining Steele to form a veteran unit in front of goal. Senior Teagen Wilson adds size and ball-winning, while sophomore Sully Pelc and junior Logan Swartz bring energy and versatility in midfield. The internal competition across the back and middle third should keep standards high through the grind of league play.

What’s at stake

Plainwell’s formula last fall—defensive organization, midfield control, and timely finishing—proved decisive in the Wolverine race. Replicating that balance while finding a few more decisive moments in knockout games is the focus. With a senior-heavy spine and experienced depth, the Trojans (conference champions a year ago) have the pieces to contend again and convert regular-season consistency into a deeper run when the brackets arrive.

Key Returners

  • Kegan Braybrooks, Sr., F

  • Nate Launt, Sr., M

  • Gavyn Steele, Sr., D

  • Niko Oberhill, Jr., M

Others to Watch

  • Teagen Wilson, Sr., D

  • Logan Swartz, Jr., M

  • Nolan Lindsey, Sr., D

  • Landon Jepsen, Sr., D

  • Davis Nooney, Sr., D

  • Sully Pelc, So., M

Outlook: The path to another Wolverine title runs through Plainwell’s organized back line and senior leadership. If emerging midfielders complement Launt and Oberhill and Braybrooks finds steady service, Plainwell has the profile of a league favorite with legitimate postseason ambitions.
