Heat Advances to UPSL National Quarterfinals
It was another win for the undefeated South Carolina United Heat as they defeated Tennessee Tempo 4-0 in their UPSL Premier National Round of 16 match played last Saturday. Heat leading scorer Tom Marriott scored his third playoff hat trick in the match to help the Heat advance.
The Heat were up 1-0 in the first half but dominated the shell-shocked Tempo team in the second half to post three goals for the 4-0 final result. The Heat will face the Florida champs Miami United on July 25 at the MOBA Stadium in Peachtree City, GA in the National Quarterfinal. Kickoff is at 6 PM.
Battery Draw Independence in USL Cup Group Stage Finale
The Charleston Battery and Charlotte Independence played to a 2-2 draw last Saturday night at Patriots Point after a 2-hour weather delay in Prinx Tires USL Cup action. Charlotte won the penalty shootout 4-2 and advanced to the USL Cup quarterfinals. Maalique Foster put the Battery ahead only to see Charlotte score two goals to jump into the lead. Colton Swan tied the match in the second half but neither team could find the third goal and win in the 90 minutes provided. The Charlotte keeper came up with two big saves in the shootout and the Independence advanced 4-2 into the knockout stage where they will host Hartford Athletic in August.
“We made so many steps over the last two months of progress, of dominating the ball with purpose,” said Battery Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “I thought we did that the last two games, but you can't give up two goals a game and expect to win games. So, we need a little bit tougher grittiness. We need a little bit better coaching from myself and the group to make sure we're a little bit more clear on that identity. And we've got to just perform. Every week's tough, we play Sacramento [Republic FC], who's a top team, next weekend. We'll have to rebound, we'll have to get back at it. We're at home next weekend, we need a big crowd, we need good energy. But it stinks to not advance.”
Triumph Falls to Kickers in USL Cup
It was another heartbreaking result for the Triumph this time in Prinx Tires USL Cup action as the Richmond Kickers scored twice in the second half to grab all three points as both teams closed out USL Cup group play. Lucas Meek had put Greenville ahead just after the halftime break but an own goal just five minutes later tied the match in the 60th minute. In the 80th minute, Richmond found a goal off a Greenville clearance error off a corner kick and the Kickers headed the ball into the empty net to grab the win. Greenville now will focus all their attention to the USL League One season and their next road trip to play Fort Wayne FC on July 18.
Bantams’ Conclude USL2 Season with Loss at Appalachian FC
The USL2 Season has ended for the South Carolina United Bantams as they finished in fifth place in the very competitive South Atlantic Division. The Bantams dropped a 0-1 result on the road at Appalachian FC in the regular season finale played last Sunday in Boone. The Bantams finished with a 5W-6L-3T record and had wins over NCFC, Port City (twice), Charlotte Eagles, and Wake FC during the season. Kemp Wilson was the leading scorer for the club netting 8 goals with Lewis Matton adding 6 goals on his season. Ronny Wakelin was the team leader in assists providing 3 helpers.
