NEW YORK — With the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season just days away from its March 13 kickoff, analysts and insiders are bracing for what many expect to be the most unpredictable campaign in the league’s 14-year history. The addition of expansion sides Boston Legacy FC and Denver Summit FC has expanded the field to 16 teams, creating a landscape defined by high-stakes player movement and tactical shifts.
The defending champions, NJ/NY Gotham FC, enter the season as the hunted after clinching their second title in three years. However, league experts warn that a repeat is far from guaranteed. The Kansas City Current, the 2025 NWSL Shield winners, have emerged as a heavy favorite to dominate the regular season once again, bolstered by the return of two-time MVP Temwa Chawinga and the blockbuster acquisition of midfielder Croix Bethune from the Washington Spirit.
"The Current showed unprecedented dominance last year, but the playoffs are a different beast," noted NWSL analysts. "While they are the pick for the Shield, the parity in this league means a lower-seeded team can easily get hot and steal the championship in November."
The 2026 season will also be defined by the emergence of a new generation of talent. Jasmine Aikey, the former Stanford standout and MAC Hermann Trophy winner, is widely regarded as the league’s top rookie to watch as she leads the inaugural Denver Summit FC roster. Aikey, who recorded 21 goals in her final collegiate season, is a primary candidate to reach the rare double-digit goal mark in her debut professional year.
Other breakout candidates include San Diego Wave FC’s Mimi Van Zanten and Houston Dash forward Kat Rader. The influx of young talent is expected to challenge established veterans, especially as several stars return from the 2025 season-ending injury list. Notably, the "Triple Espresso" attacking trio of Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson, and Sophia Wilson is reunited, with Rodman recently signing a record-breaking $2 million annual contract to remain with the Washington Spirit.
The Spirit, runners-up for two consecutive seasons, are desperate to finally secure the trophy. However, they will have to navigate the early season without goalkeeper Audrey Kingsbury, who was recently placed on the maternity leave list.
Beyond the established powerhouses, Racing Louisville FC has been identified as a "sneaky underdog" capable of causing chaos in the standings. After reaching the playoffs for the first time in 2025 and capturing The Women’s Cup titles, Louisville’s young roster has matured into a cohesive unit that could disrupt the traditional hierarchy.
The league’s expansion into Denver and Boston has already made waves off the pitch. Denver Summit FC recently announced it has sold over 45,000 tickets for its home opener at Empower Field at Mile High, a figure that threatens to break the NWSL single-game attendance record.
As the league enters this new era of 16 teams and record-breaking valuations, the margin for error has never been thinner. With the NWSL Championship set for November 21, the road to the title begins this Friday with a marquee matchup featuring the Washington Spirit hosting the Portland Thorns at Audi Field.
