VANCOUVER, B.C. — Playing their fourth match in just 12 days, the Colorado Rapids (4-5-1) struggled to find their legs at BC Place on Saturday night, falling 3-1 to a clinical Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8-1-0).
Despite the result, the evening marked a historic individual achievement for Rapids forward Rafael Navarro, who joined an elite group of club legends with his 50th regular-season goal contribution.
A Difficult Start North of the Border
The reigning Western Conference champion Whitecaps looked the fresher of the two sides from the opening whistle. In the 7th minute, Cheikh Sabaly opened the scoring for Vancouver, finishing a pass from veteran Thomas Müller.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute when Brian White capitalized on a breakaway chance. Down 2-0 early, Colorado faced an uphill battle against a Whitecaps team that Head Coach Matt Wells described post-game as "the most complete team in MLS."
Navarro Hits the "50" Mark
The Rapids clawed their way back into the match in the 33rd minute. The play began with a long ball from Hamzat Ojediran to a sprinting Georgi Minoungou. After a congested scramble at the goal mouth, Rafael Navarro pounced on a deflection to halve the deficit.
The goal was a milestone for the Brazilian attacker:
Historic Achievement: Navarro is just the eighth player in Rapids history to reach 50 regular-season goal contributions.
Red-Hot Form: He has now recorded 11 goal contributions (7g, 4a) in his last nine matches.
Vancouver Seals the Result
The Rapids controlled long stretches of possession in the second half, with Coach Wells even tacticaly shifting to a three-man backline to spark more offense. However, the energy levels from a grueling schedule appeared to take their toll. Vancouver put the game out of reach in the 85th minute as White netted his second of the night to secure the 3-1 victory.
"I think you saw on the pitch the big difference in preparation," Coach Wells said. "If we're going to lose, I want us to lose full throttle... tonight I saw that there's still a long way to go from a mentality perspective."
