Battery Draws 2-2 on the Road at Legion
Berry with the brace earns a point for Charleston
It was a 2-2 draw Saturday night in Birmingham as the Charleston Battery saw forward Miguel Berry score a brace to earn a point at the Legion in USL Championship soccer.
Berry scored his brace in a seven-minute span early in the first half to set a new career single-season record with nine goals scored in 2026.
Birmingham scored the opening goal of the match in the 11th minute as Sebastian Tregarthen converted a long-range effort he rifled into the far post from just outside the top of the box.
Charleston’s Miguel Berry was up next on the score sheet as he pounced on a loose Legion square ball played across their back line. Berry stole the ball, dribbled an opponent, and then beat the Legion keeper to the near post for the equalizer in the 14th minute.
Berry was on his brace in the 21st minute after a patient spell of possession from the Battery sent Jeremy Kelly on a marauding solo dribble up the middle of the park. Kelly drew all the defenders and then slipped the ball into Berry who calmly turned and rocketed the ball into the back post upper 90 past the sprawling Legion keeper.
Former Battery man Romario Williams tied the game in the 39th minute as Tyler Pasher dribbled into the Battery box from the right flank and found Williams at the back post for a right footed volley into the net.
Colton Swan almost claimed the lead back for the Battery just minutes later, but his shot rang off the bar keeping things knotted at 2-2 entering the halftime break.
The teams traded shots in the second half but neither side could produce the game-winner down the stretch as the match ended 2-2.
“I think if you step back and look at it, 80 to 85% of the game played out as we anticipated with their movements,” said Battery Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “They have a strong front four with special players who have been making plays for years in this league. So, we knew how the game would play out.”
“The attitude and the effort were strong,” finished Pirmann. “We have to improve some training habits with a couple of players. We have to improve some execution of the game plan, and then we have to keep things simple and play within ourselves, and make sure we're doing what's best to win games, and not doing what's best for the individual. At the end of the day, the performance was pretty good, but we're at the stage where pretty good's not going to cut it at the end of the season and into the playoffs.”
Charleston remains in second place in the USLC Eastern Conference table on 40 points (12W-8L-4T) now eight points behind the Tamp Bay Rowdies. The Battery will host Monterey Bay FC on September 19 at 7 PM.
