STORRS, Conn. — It was a bittersweet Sunday at Morrone Stadium as Connecticut United FC showcased a dominant early-game performance and a historic roster milestone, but ultimately fell 2-1 to Philadelphia Union II. Despite the result, the afternoon highlighted the rapidly growing talent in the CT United pipeline and their ability to dictate play against established MLS NEXT Pro opposition.
The match drew significant attention before the opening whistle as Academy call-up Niko Koloniaris was named to the starting lineup. At just 15 years old, Koloniaris became the youngest starter in Connecticut professional soccer history. He currently ranks as the second-youngest starter across both MLS and MLS NEXT Pro for the 2026 season.
Early Dominance and the Breakthrough
CT United set the tone from the first whistle, suffocating Philadelphia with a high press. After an early goal was waved off for offside, the hosts officially found their breakthrough in the 19th minute.
Captain Alex Monis—who recorded his first assist of the campaign—threaded a clinical through ball to Cauã Paixão. The attacker showed immense composure, rounding the Union goalkeeper before slotting the ball home for his first goal of the 2026 season. The 1-0 lead was a reflection of a first half where CT United limited Philadelphia’s chances while creating multiple dangerous looks at the other end.
Union II Strikes Back
Philadelphia Union II proved why they are a dangerous side in transition, finding an equalizer in the 37th minute when Edward Davis capitalized on a cross from Stas Korzeniowski.
The momentum shifted further in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Korzeniowski turned from playmaker to finisher, converting a pass from Mamoutou Berthe to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
CT United Head Coach Shavar Thomas responded with a triple substitution in the 68th minute, bringing on Rickson van Hees, Hivan Kouonang, and Andre Applewhaite. The "Boys in Blue" spent the final 20 minutes on the front foot, with Monis and Ernesto Gomez orchestrating several late surges, but the Philadelphia defense held firm to see out the victory.

Historical Significance
The match served as a showcase for the CT United Academy. In addition to being the youngest starter in state history, Niko Koloniaris now holds the title of the sixth-youngest player to make a professional debut in American soccer this year. His 79-minute shift demonstrated a maturity that bodes well for the club's "youth-first" philosophy.
Looking Ahead
CT United FC (1-0-1 at Morrone) remains at home for their next fixture. They will look to turn a strong performance into three points when they host New England Revolution II.
