Velocity Wins 2-1 over Visiting Triumph
The Greenville Triumph made the cross-country trip over the weekend to visit the Spokane Velocity in USL League One Match Week 25 action. The Velocity scored two early goals and held off a late Triumph rally to claim all three points in the 2-1 win.
The unlucky bounces on the road continued for the Triumph as an own goal and goal from a corner kick put the hosts up early in the match. Greenville scratched their way back into the match in the second half and were just unlucky to not level the score in second-half stoppage time as the visitors dropped another result on the road this season.
Spokane took the lead in the 27th minute as a low, driven cross into the box was redirected into the Triumph nets for the own goal. Just a few minutes later, Spokane doubled their advantage converting a corner kick as Lucky Opara turned the ball into the nets in the 30th minute off a header.
With Spokane up 2-0 at the half, it was Greenville that climbed back into the match in the 54th minute as Anthony Patti collected a corner kick with his chest before firing the ball past the Spokane keeper and into the net for his first professional goal.
Amal Knight made several key plays in the Triumph net during the second half to keep the match within reach, ending the night with eight saves
Greenville almost scored the game-tying goal in the 93rd minute after a Devin Boyce free kick created chaos inside the Spokane penalty area. A series of blocked shots, mis-cleared balls, and deflections around the area found the ball back on the foot of Boyce who shot the ball high over the bar to end the wild sequence of play in the final seconds of the match. Final Score Spokane 2-1 Greenville.
"We need to continue to work to create more chances and moments in the game when we can control the game," said Triumph Head Coach Dave Dixon. "Every game remaining is like a playoff game for us, and we need to play with that mentality.”
The Triumph return home to GE Vernova Park on August 29 as FC Naples visits at 7 PM. Greenville slips a spot to fifteenth in the USL League One table on 20 points (5W-11L-5T), now twelve points outside of the playoff line.
