Triumph's Road Woes Continue at Fort Wayne

The road woes for the Greenville Triumph continued last Saturday as the team lost 3-0 at Fort Wayne FC in USL League One regular season play. Greenville only has one road win this season and the lack of goals along with a few defensive miscues sank the Triumph in this latest match.
Greenville created numerous chances during the match, but it was the hosts who were more clinical around the nets putting away their chances for the win.
Fort Wayne scored first in the 16th minute as a free kick from the left edge of the box was powered into the near-post netting off a contested header by Ryan Becher.
Greenville almost found the equalizer in the 22nd minute as a shot was scrambled off the goal line by the Fort Wayne defense to keep things 1-0 in favor of the hosts.
Fort Wayne scored their second goal in the 35th minute as an alert Lilian Ricol saw Triumph keeper Amal Knight playing well off his line as Ricol cleverly chipped the ball from over 40 yards into the empty net over Knight now at full stretch trying to recover into position.
Greenville again tested the Fort Wayne keeper forcing a save from Bernd Schipmann just before the halftime whistle in a clearly frustrating half for the visitors. Greenville had just as many chances to score as the hosts yet found themselves on the wrong end of the score line after some more unlucky moments in front of the opponent’s goal.
Greenville returned to the pitch with more energy in the second half and began to work their way back into the game forcing another save from Schipmann but then saw all that hard work undone with a third Fort Wayne goal in the 57th minute.
Kabiru Gafar scored the third Fort Wayne goal after going on a long solo run up the right channel outpacing the recovering Triumph defender. Gafar drove into the box drawing Knight off the Greenville goal line to then clip the ball with the outside of his right foot to guide the ball past the onrushing keeper for the 3-0 lead.
It what would summarize the match, Greenville produced a shot in the 78th minute that bounced all over and around the Fort Wayne goal line but just refused to cross the line and reward the visitors with a goal for all their hard work.
Greenville had one final quality look at the goal in the 82nd minute as Azaad Liadi’s free kick from the top of the box was saved by Schipmann to end the Greenville comeback bid. The Triumph forced five saves from the Fort Wayne keeper in the match as these were all quality chances that would have impacted not only the score but the momentum of the match. At the final whistle it was just another cruel, unlucky night of soccer for the visiting Triumph.
Greenville stays in fifteenth place in the table with a 4W-8L-2T (14 points) record as they regroup and travel to Corpus Christi FC on July 25.
