CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy’s continental ambitions came to a halt on Wednesday night as they suffered a 3-0 defeat (and an aggregate loss) to Deportivo Toluca FC at Dignity Health Sports Park. Despite controlling 56.8% of the possession, the Galaxy were undone by a clinical Mexican side that capitalized on early pressure and second-half transition opportunities.

With the defeat, the Galaxy's run in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup ends in the Quarterfinal stage, leaving the club to focus entirely on their domestic campaign.

Toluca Takes Control

The visitors wasted no time asserting themselves, finding the back of the net in just the 10th minute. Jesús Gallardo latched onto a pass from Franco Romero at the edge of the area and unleashed a left-footed strike into the top-left corner, a goal Head Coach Greg Vanney later suggested his defense should have been "brave" enough to block.

The Galaxy struggled to find an answer to Toluca's man-to-man press for much of the first half. While the hosts created 12 shots over the course of the match, Toluca’s Paulinho Dias put the tie out of reach in the second half. Dias scored in the 58th minute with a low finish and followed it up six minutes later with a delicate chip over JT Marcinkowski to finalize the 3-0 scoreline.

Milestones and Returns

Despite the result, the night featured two significant individual storylines for the Galaxy:

  • Captain’s Century: Defender Maya Yoshida earned his 100th appearance for the LA Galaxy across all competitions.

  • Paintsil Returns: Winger Joseph Paintsil made his highly anticipated return to the pitch as a 67th-minute substitute. The Ghanaian international had been sidelined since March 7 due to an injury sustained against Colorado.

Vanney: "Frustrating, Not Worrisome"

Reflecting on the defeat, Greg Vanney noted that the physical nature of the "duels" was the deciding factor.

"I think [the opponent] managed the duels situation better than us. They were quicker than us to second balls," Vanney said. "It's frustrating, I don't think it's worrisome. These games are very different than MLS games... All of our attention now can go to MLS."
