MILWAUKEE, WI — The San Diego Sockers are one win away from their 17th franchise championship after gutting out a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Wave in Match One of the Ron Newman Cup Finals on Wednesday night.
In a hostile environment at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena, the Sockers relied on a clinical attack and a relentless defensive effort—blocking 14 shots—to secure their league-leading 11th road win of the year. San Diego can now clinch the title on home turf this Friday.
A Dominant Start and "Gerry Ball" Drama
San Diego dictated the tempo early. Tavoy Morgan opened the scoring in the first quarter off a clever wall-pass from Charlie Gonzalez, and by the end of the third period, the Sockers had built a commanding 4-1 lead. Gonzalez was the architect of the offense, finishing the night with a goal and two assists, while veteran Nick Perera added a crucial header to stretch the gap.
However, the fourth quarter saw Milwaukee deploy "Gerry Ball"—bringing goalkeeper Gerardo Perez into the attack to create a 6-on-5 advantage. The strategy nearly paid off as the Wave struck twice in just 78 seconds via Ian Bennett, cutting the lead to 4-3 and igniting the home crowd.
Nilton de Andrade Delivers the Dagger
With the momentum swinging toward Milwaukee, the Sockers' defense held firm for nearly ten minutes of sustained pressure. The relief finally came at the 9:25 mark of the fourth quarter. Captain Cesar Cerda weaved through three defenders before finding Nilton de Andrade, who smashed home his first goal of the playoffs.
Though Perez scored a late goal for Milwaukee to bring it to 5-4, San Diego successfully killed the clock to secure the series lead.
Post-Game Fallout: Captain Cerda Suspended
The victory was marred by a controversial incident at the final whistle. As the horn sounded, Milwaukee’s Tony Walls took Cerda down from behind. While falling, Cerda’s leg kicked out and struck Walls in the groin. Following a video review, officials issued Cerda a red card for violent conduct.
The Sockers captain, who has been instrumental in the team's late-season surge, is currently suspended for Match Two on Friday, pending a potential league review.
