ANN ARBOR, Mich. – To say that Ann Arbor Skyline has lost a lot of soccer talent the last couple of years would be an understatement.
The Eagles girls soccer team graduated 10 players that saw substantial minutes last season in 2024, and most of them were starters. The 2023 squad saw eight players depart via graduation.
And skyline has been good, winning Division 1 district titles in four of the last six years – one of the years where the Eagles did not win was 2020 when there was no season altogether – while in 2023 league rival Saline won that district and advanced to the Final Four.
Skyline won district crowns in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024 and two of those district titles came with two-time All-State Dream Team goalkeeper Sophia Nehro under the framework. Nehro was one of those talented players that has graduated. That has created a lot of new opportunity for this year's roster.
Skyline, the defending Southeastern Conference Red Division champs, were back at it again against another rival Monday. The Eagles paid neighboring Ann Arbor Huron a visit and came away with a 1-0 victory.
While Skyline may have started slow with a 2-0 loss to Plymouth in the season opener last month and a rare 8-0 bruising by defending Division 1 state champion Rochester Adams in the second game, the Eagles have righted the ship since being outscored 10-0 in the first two games.
Skyline has now won four straight games, outscoring the opposition 21-2 in that span to move the Eagles’ record up to 4-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the SEC-Red. Skyline is tied for the league lead with Saline.
River Pham, a rising star on the offensive end who is coming off a strong club season with the Michigan Tigers Elite-64 team in her age bracket, scored the lone goal off a penalty kick as Skyline handed Huron not only its first loss of the campaign but also became the first team to keep the River Rats off the scoreboard this season.
Collectively, Skyline’s improving defense recorded its second clean sheet in the last three games.
SALINE 2, ANN ARBOR PIONEER 0: Another game and another clean sheet for the top-ranked team in Division 1. Kaylee Mitzel recorded the shutout in goal and her defense smothered Pioneer to help the Hornets record their seventh straight shutout and eighth of the season. Only New Boston Huron and Dearborn have scored goals on Saline, which owns a 62-3 scoring edge this season. Makens Means and Sienna Snyder scored the goals for Saline (9-0-0, 3-0-0). Pioneer (3-3-2, 1-1-1) was shut out for the second time this season.
