ONTARIO, Calif. — The Empire Strykers have announced a significant leadership shift as they enter the final stretch of the 2025–26 MASL season, naming team captain and veteran defender Robert Palmer as Interim Head Coach.

The move follows an unconventional but successful "player-coach" performance by Palmer last weekend, which saw the Strykers ignite for a crucial 6–3 road victory over the Milwaukee Wave. The organization is also in active discussions with former Head Coach Onua Obasi regarding a transition into a new high-level role within the front office.

"In professional sports, sometimes a change—even a difficult and unconventional one—can shift the psychology of a group," said Managing Partner Jeff Burum. "It's about creating a different energy that has come at the right time for us. We saw a positive, collective response at Milwaukee, and with a playoff berth on the line, we feel it's important to keep drawing on that momentum."

A Strategic Transition

The decision comes at a delicate time for Empire, as the club sits squarely on the playoff bubble. By elevating Palmer, a respected league veteran, the Strykers are betting on his ability to lead from the pitch while managing tactical adjustments.

Despite the change on the bench, Burum emphasized the club’s continued commitment to Obasi, praising the Englishman’s expertise and work ethic. Obasi, for his part, expressed a desire to remain part of the Strykers' future growth.

"I understand that certain situations may call for unconventional measures, and I respect the decision," said Obasi. "I'm grateful for the way the club has handled everything and for the open-minded exchange about how I can keep contributing in a meaningful way."

The Final Sprint

The Strykers have just two fixtures remaining to secure their postseason fate. The "Palmer Era" officially begins this Sunday as the team travels to New York for a difficult road test.

  • March 22: @ Utica City FC

  • March 29: vs. St. Louis Ambush (Home Finale)

The regular-season finale on March 29 at Toyota Arena promises to be a historic day for the organization. In addition to the men’s high-stakes battle against St. Louis, the club will host a high-profile women's exhibition match between the Empire Strykers and San Diego Sockers women’s teams.

With their playoff lives potentially hanging in the balance, the Strykers are hoping this strategic shift provides the "different energy" needed to cross the finish line and compete for the Ron Newman Cup.
