ST. CHARLES, Mo. — The Baltimore Blast have emerged as the hottest team in the Major Arena Soccer League, vaulting into the thick of the Supporters' Shield race following a high-stakes weekend sweep of the St. Louis Ambush. With two gritty road victories at The Family Arena, David Bascome’s side has extended its winning streak to five games and now sits just three points behind the first-place San Diego Sockers.
The weekend series showcased the Blast’s penchant for late-game heroics. On Friday night, Baltimore snapped St. Louis’ own five-game winning streak with a 5-4 comeback win. After trailing 3-1 at the half and 4-3 heading into the final frame, Oumar Sylla delivered a spectacular equalizer before Wellington Bramusse found the back of the net in the 14th minute to stun the home crowd.
“This group doesn’t quit,” Blast officials noted following the opening victory. “Winning on the road in this league requires a specific kind of mental toughness, and we’re seeing our veterans and younger players mesh at exactly the right time as we head toward the postseason.”
The rematch on Sunday proved to be a mirror image of Friday’s drama. St. Louis again jumped out to multiple leads, including a 4-3 advantage late in the fourth quarter. However, the Blast struck twice in the final two minutes of play. Eber Ospina provided the leveler with just over two minutes remaining, and Juan Pereira secured the full six points for the visitors with a clinical finish to seal another 5-4 victory.
Baltimore’s resurgence has been anchored by elite defensive numbers and a rejuvenated power play. Over the course of the current five-game tear—which includes wins over Utica City FC, the Empire Strykers, and the Milwaukee Wave—the Blast have converted over 26% of their shots. Defensively, the tandem of Julian Rodriguez and Jorge Navarette has been stellar, combining for a 75.6% save percentage during the streak.
The veteran duo of Jonatas Melo and Juan Pereira continues to lead the charge. Both players, who have spent more than a decade with the club, are enjoying career-best campaigns, averaging over a point per game. Their leadership has been vital as the Blast move from a fifth-place position into a legitimate threat for the regular-season title.
With only six games remaining in the regular season, the Blast now control their own destiny in the hunt for home-field advantage. The standings remain historically tight, with only a few points separating the top four teams in the league. Baltimore’s remaining schedule is gauntlet-style, featuring matchups against the San Diego Sockers, Kansas City Comets, and a crucial rematch with the Milwaukee Wave.
The loss for St. Louis, meanwhile, drops the Ambush into a tie for second in the Eastern Conference. While the Ambush still maintain a strong chance to secure a high seed, their inability to close out games against Baltimore has shifted the momentum in the East toward Maryland.
The Blast return home to Towson this Friday, March 13, to host Utica City FC. As the sprint to the Ron Newman Cup playoffs intensifies, Baltimore looks to maintain the league’s longest active winning streak and potentially overtake San Diego for the top spot in the MASL standings.
