SAN JOSE, Calif. — Amahl Pellegrino scored in the second minute and Preston Judd added another just before halftime as the San Jose Earthquakes held off Sacramento Republic FC 2-1 on Wednesday night in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 at PayPal Park.
Pellegrino opened the scoring early, finishing off a cross from Judd after a buildup involving Mark-Anthony Kaye. Judd doubled the lead in the 44th minute, volleying home a pass from Niko Tsakiris, with Nick Lima also involved in the setup.
San Jose controlled much of the match, finishing with 59.3 percent possession and a 17-5 edge in shots.
Despite playing the final minutes down a man after defender Jamar Ricketts was sent off in the 84th minute, the Earthquakes held on. Sacramento’s Trevor Amann pulled one back in the sixth minute of stoppage time, converting a late assist from Rodrigo López – his 13th career Open Cup assist, extending his tournament record.
San Jose advances to host the Portland Timbers in the Round of 16 on May 20 or 21.
