SAN JOSE, Calif. – With a chance to win it, Owen Wolff buried his opportunity.
The midfielder calmly walked to the spot and drilled his penalty kick as Austin FC posted a 4-2 edge in a shootout over the San Jose Earthquakes to advance to the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at PayPal Park.
The two sides were tied at 2-2 following the two 15-minute overtime periods.
Austin FC nailed all four PKs in the shootout, while San Jose made its second and fourth attempts before Wolff clinched it. Diego Rubio, Myrto Uzuni and Robert Taylor converted their penalties for Austin FC.
Austin FC erased a one-goal deficit on two occasions on this day.
Cristian Arango gave San Jose a 1-0 lead with a 12th-minute goal off an assist by Ousseni Bouda.
Austin FC finally tied the game in the 65th minute when Brandon Vazquez sent one home. The two sides took the 1-1 tie into the two 15-minute overtime periods.
San Jose regained the lead in the 99th minute when Benji Kikanovic put the Earthquakes up 2-1.
Uzuni tied it a second time with his goal in the 115th minute to forge the 2-2 stalemate and help send the game to penalty kicks.
Brad Stuver made one save for Austin FC and watched another shot sail wide during the shootout. Stuver made nine saves overall in 120 minutes of play for the winners.
Josef Martinez (second) and Ian Harkes (fourth) made their penalties for San Jose.
The Earthquakes actually held a 27-12 overall shots advantage after 120 minutes of play, including 11-4 with shots on goal, and also held a 7-4 edge off cornerkicks.
Daniel made two saves in goal for the Earthquakes.
The Verde & Black will face Minnesota United FC in the Open Cup Semifinals Round on either Tuesday, Sept. 16 or Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Allianz Field. Official details for the match will be announced soon.
