Hudsonville Brings Back Elite Defense, Aims for State Run
HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — After finishing 10-3-7 and capturing the OK Red Conference title last fall, Hudsonville enters the 2025 season with a proven formula for success: defense first. The Eagles, who saw their season end in the district round of the Division 1 playoffs, return one of the top back lines in the state and believe they have the pieces to not only repeat as conference champions but also make a deep tournament push.
“Our goal is to compete for a conference title and make a state run,” Head Coach Chris Deiss said. “With the group we have returning, especially in the back, we’re confident we can build on last year’s success.”
Experienced Defense Leads the Way
The heart of Hudsonville’s identity lies in its defensive unit. Senior goalkeeper Drew Hersberger, an Honorable Mention All-State selection, returns as a commanding presence between the posts. In front of him, the Eagles feature an experienced trio of all-district defenders: center back Bryce Hall (Sr.), left back Luke Disler (Sr.), and sophomore standout Nolan Cronkright (CB). Junior Isaac Retberg (RB) completes a unit that has drawn recognition as one of the strongest defensive groups in Michigan.
“They’ve played together, they’ve been tested, and they’ve delivered in big moments,” Deiss said of his back line. “That’s the backbone of this team.”
Offensive Spark on the Wings and Up Top
While the defense sets the tone, Hudsonville has attacking options ready to make an impact. Senior Alex Tillotson brings speed and creativity on the wing, while junior striker Kingston Santana provides finishing ability in the final third. With the team’s ability to keep games tight, finding timely goals will be the key to advancing deeper into the postseason.
Building on Momentum
Last year’s OK Red championship showed Hudsonville can handle the grind of a tough conference schedule. This fall, the Eagles aim to use that same consistency as a springboard toward a deeper postseason run.
“Winning the conference was a great step,” Deiss said. “Now it’s about translating that into playoff success.”
Keys to the Season
Defensive Wall: With Hersberger, Hall, Disler, Cronkright, and Retberg back, Hudsonville has the structure to limit even the strongest attacking sides.
Attacking Depth: Tillotson and Santana give the Eagles multiple looks up top, but others will need to step forward to diversify the attack.
Playoff Breakthrough: After bowing out in the districts, Hudsonville will look to take the next step and establish itself as a true contender in Division 1.
Outlook
With an elite defense, veteran leadership, and a balanced mix of seniors and underclassmen, Hudsonville has the talent to defend its OK Red crown. If the attack finds rhythm to complement its back line, the Eagles could emerge as one of the state’s most dangerous teams this fall.
