The Gulf Coast League Two semi-finals were both exciting games that brought everything full circle to a rematch of last year's Championship game.
Central Louisiana 0 (5) - 0 (3) LFSC Phoenix
This was predicted to be a close match, and it didn't disappoint. The Phoenix are newcomers to the league, but you wouldn't know it from the way they went through the season, and then took Central to the wire. They can also take some consolation in the fact that they earned the only win over the two teams that have made it to the Championship. For their part, Central Louisiana played the game their way, and kept the Phoenix from scoring. After 120 minutes of hard-fought action, they took care of business and scored on every PK in the shootout.
Gulf Coast United 2-4 BRSC Capitals
GCU put together a terrific regular season and earned a bye and home field advantage for the semi-finals. Gulf Coast took the early lead in this one with a goal in the 7th minute by Trey Roche. BRSC would equalize just ten minutes later, and then add another to take a 2-1 lead into the half. GCU pulled one back very early in the second half, but BRSC were able to get the go-ahead goal from Holger Padilla-Alvarez in the 57th minute and then add another for insurance to earn the narrow victory on the road. Anthony Howard had a brace for the Capitals, and was named their Man of the Match.
Championship Game: Central Louisiana vs BRSC Capitals; Saturday, July 11 at 7:15.
Here we go again. This is a rematch of last year's game, a very tense and chippy 2-1 win for Central Louisiana on the road. This year's game will flip venues, as Central Louisiana will host.
These two teams are long-time rivals in the league, and there's no love lost between them. They have clearly defined styles, and are unlikely to do anything dramatically different now. Central is known for playing a very tight and tough defense, allowing only 6 goals all season. BRSC is more known for their offense, but shouldn't be sold short on defense, as they have only allowed 8 goals this year. One thing is guaranteed: a Louisiana team will be the champion again this year, and maintained bragging rights over the Mississippi clubs.
