GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Fresh off a district championship, Grand Rapids West Catholic enters 2025 aiming to defend its crown and climb the Division 3 ladder after last year’s .500 campaign turned into postseason momentum.

2024 Recap

The Falcons finished 11-11-1 and 4th in the OK Gold (5-7), but delivered when it mattered most—edging Grand Rapids Catholic Central 1–0 for the district title before bowing out to Hartford in the regional semifinal.

Core Returning Group

West Catholic brings back more than half of its starters and an estimated 80% of its scoring, headlined by a proven one-two spine up top and in goal.

  • Landon Smith (F, Sr.) — Two-time All-Conference, two-time Second Team All-State; 22 goals last season and the focal point of the attack.

  • Elliott Plum (GK, Sr.) — All-State Honorable Mention; an experienced shot-stopper who anchors a settled back line.

  • Griffin Vyn (M, Sr.) — Two-way midfielder with veteran presence.

  • Ethan Zull (D, Sr.) — Senior leader in the back, key to first-ball wins and organization.

  • Daniel Dicosola (M, Jr.) — Reliable distributor who connects thirds.

  • Leo Hayes (D, Jr.) — Emerging defender with range and recovery pace.

New Faces to Watch

The program anticipates impact minutes from additional juniors, a sophomore, and a couple of freshmen—part of the largest incoming freshman class in program history. Early integration and depth could prove decisive over a long OK Gold grind.

Tactical Outlook

Expect the Falcons to lean on Smith’s finishing and a pragmatic defensive shape built around Plum’s command of the box. If midfield balance allows for consistent service wide and into the No. 9, West Catholic’s chance creation should stay high while the veteran back line keeps matches in control.

Bottom Line

With elite returning production and stability in goal, West Catholic has the tools to navigate another loaded district and contend beyond it. If the newcomers settle quickly and the senior core stays healthy, a return trip to regionals—and a deeper run—are firmly on the table.
