Comets Re-Sign Midfielder Joe Wainwright for 2025–26 Season
KANSAS CITY, MO — The Kansas City Comets have announced the re-signing of midfielder Joe Wainwright for the upcoming 2025–26 MASL season. Per team and league policy, contract terms were not disclosed.
Wainwright returns after closing out his rookie campaign on a strong note, scoring three goals in the final three matches of the 2024–25 season.
“I’m buzzing to sign another year with the team and can’t wait for the season,” Wainwright said. “I learned a lot from my first season and I’m ready for this upcoming one. We have a great team and are going to do great things.”
The 6-foot-4 midfielder made his MASL debut on Feb. 2, helping the Comets to a 7–3 win over the Harrisburg Heat. After earning another opportunity on March 21, he broke through with a two-goal performance against the Tacoma Stars and added a third goal on March 30 versus the Baltimore Blast.
“Joe is so dangerous on the ball,” head coach Stefan Stokic said. “He’s confident going forward and creates problems for defenders every time he steps on the field. Having him back gives us another weapon in attack.”
Before joining the professional ranks, Wainwright competed at the NCAA Division II level with Rogers State University and previously played NAIA soccer at William Penn University. His development also included local stints with Sunflower State FC and Santa Fe Wanderers, as well as time in USL League Two with Coachella FC.
A native of Manchester, England, the 25-year-old attended Parrenhorn High School before becoming the soccer team captain at Holy Cross.
Wainwright will continue preseason preparations with Kansas City as the Comets gear up for the 2025–26 campaign. Fans can purchase tickets for the Nov. 29 home opener against the St. Louis Ambush at kccomets.com/tickets.
