ATLANTA (AP) — Brad Guzan, a longtime U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper and cornerstone of Atlanta United FC, announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season, closing the book on a 21-year professional career.
Guzan, 41, made 546 professional appearances across MLS and the English Premier League. He spent the final eight seasons of his career with Atlanta United, where he helped lead the club to the 2018 MLS Cup, the 2019 U.S. Open Cup and the 2019 Campeones Cup. His final regular-season match is set for Saturday when Atlanta hosts D.C. United.
“This sport has given me everything,” Guzan said in a statement. “I’m grateful to my family, my teammates, the fans and every club I’ve represented. It’s been an incredible ride.”
Guzan began his professional career in 2005 with Chivas USA before moving to England, where he spent eight seasons with Aston Villa FC and also played for Hull City AFC and Middlesbrough FC. He returned to MLS in 2017 to anchor Atlanta’s defense during its rise as a league power.
On the international stage, Guzan earned 64 caps for United States men's national soccer team. He represented the U.S. at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and was part of three Gold Cup-winning squads.
“Brad has been a leader on and off the field,” Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda said. “His professionalism, passion and commitment helped build this club’s identity.”
Guzan’s retirement marks the end of an era for both club and country. He is expected to be honored before his final home match this weekend.
