Fogarty, Almanza both net braces as Armada cruise to all-important Sunshine Conference victory to remain in third
NORTH PORT, Fla. – Talk about responding from its first loss of the season.
Jacksonville Armada FC bounced back Wednesday with a resounding 7-0 Sunshine Conference victory over host North Port Fusion at North Port High School.
Ranked 16th in the WPSL National Rankings that were released on Wednesday, the Jacksonville Armada FC scored in the first minute, never took its foot off the pedal and even added the last goal five minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game to make a statement win.
In its previous outing, the Armada FC dropped its first game of the season to Florida Premier FC (2-1), which is the second place team in the division.
Jacksonville improved to 4-1-1 overall and in the division. The side owns a 31-6 scoring edge and 13 points in the Sunshine Conference standings – trailing only 14th-ranked West Florida Flames (5-0-1, 16 points) and No. 25 Florida Premier FC (5-1-0, 15 points).
Jacksonville Armada FC has now averaged 5.17 goals-per-game this season while holding opponents to 1.00 goals a contest. The side picked up its fourth shutout of the campaign.
Savannah Yeager picked up the clean sheet with sterling defensive help from the back line of Mia Duncan, Landry Bower, Kylie Ovenstreet and Caitlin Seaborne.
Meanwhile on the offensive end, the Armada FC dominated.
LizAnne Fogarty scored in the first minute off a Nancy Almanza pass to set the tone less than one minute into the game.
Almanza widened the game with a 26th minute goal and a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Jacksonville Armada FC opened up the floodgates with five more goals and to register its second-highest offensive output of the season with its vaunted attack.
In the second half, Fogarty struck again in the 46th minute to open up a quick 3-0 lead less than a minute into the second half. Almanza struck gold only about two minutes later with her second goal on the evening in the 48th minute.
Both Fogarty and Almanza finished the night with braces and one assist apiece.
Sophie Pontieri got her name in the book with a 58th minute tally, Brooke Bunton chipped in with a 78th minute goal and Maddie Williams capped the scoring with her first goal five minutes into stoppage time (90+5) and just seconds before the conclusion of the game.
The side is still in contention for the top spot in a crowded three-team race for the conference title. Jacksonville did tie conference leader West Florida Flames (4-4) in the second game of the season and the loss to Florida Premier. The Armada FC also own an impressive 11-0 victory earlier this season over AGC Football.
Jacksonville will be back in action Friday when the Armada host Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions FC for a 7 p.m. clash.
