INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Weather delays Friday in central Indiana halted the start of Friday’s WPSL opener with FC Pride and league newcomer Peoria City until nearly 10 p.m. CT.

The much-anticipated WPSL debut for Peoria City was delayed nearly three hours due to inclement weather, with kickoff finally taking place at 9:45 p.m. EST — well past the original 7 p.m. start time.

Peoria’s inaugural WPSL starting XI featured Peyton Rhodes (goalkeeper), Ellen Dahlquist, Yeirdan “YeYe” Padilla, Sosi Dadekian, Leah Crotty, Lily Sutter, AJ Mayock, Bree Cordray (Captain), Erika Wells, Liza Wiley, and Annika Klauss.

The first half saw a tight contest with neither team able to break through, leaving the game scoreless at the break.

FC Pride opened the scoring in the 50th minute and added a second just three minutes later, capitalizing on a pair of set pieces to take a 2-0 lead.

Peoria answered back in the 70th minute when Annika Klauss (Ball State University) found the net for the first goal in club WPSL history, assisted by YeYe Padilla (Heartland Community College).

Despite several late chances and an aggressive push in the closing stages, Peoria fell just short, 2-1, against the side ranked #19 in WPSL’s preseason power rankings.

Peoria City extends its heartfelt thanks to the fans who traveled to Indianapolis and endured the weather delay, as well as to those who supported the team from home via the livestream. Your unwavering support made our first WPSL match truly special.

The WPSL home opener is set for Saturday, May 24, when Peoria hosts Lou Fusz Athletic at 7:00 p.m. CT at Shea Stadium.
