Veteran Coach Bob Butehorn Joins Inside the Game
(Shelby Township, MI) – Premier Media Group’s Inside the Game welcomes one of the most experienced coaches in college soccer this week, as University of South Florida head men’s coach Bob Butehorn sits down to reflect on a career that spans more than three decades, multiple NCAA Tournament berths, and a reputation for player development at the highest levels.
Building a Legacy at USF
Since arriving in Tampa in December 2016, Butehorn has guided the Bulls to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2022), highlighted by a second-round run in 2022 after a thrilling 4-2 win over Hofstra. His program has developed into a consistent contender, notching victories over six nationally ranked opponents during his tenure and producing seven MLS SuperDraft picks and numerous all-conference standouts.
Butehorn’s squads have consistently earned recognition across the American Athletic Conference, with eight All-AAC selections and six All-Rookie Team members during his time. Among them: Adrian Billhardt (2017 AAC Rookie of the Year) and Kazuna Takase (2021 AAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year).
Championship Pedigree
Before taking over in Tampa, Butehorn laid the foundation of success at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he was the inaugural head coach and turned the Eagles into an Atlantic Sun powerhouse. In 10 seasons, he captured six straight regular-season titles, guided the program to four NCAA Tournament appearances, and earned three Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year honors. FGCU rose as high as No. 11 in the national rankings under his leadership.
As a player, Butehorn was part of the University of Tampa’s 1981 NCAA Division II national championship team, giving him first-hand experience with winning cultures that he later translated into his coaching career.
A Career of Developing Talent
From USF to FGCU and earlier stops at St. Bonaventure, Penn, and Maryland, Butehorn’s coaching footprint has touched every level of the college game. Along the way, he has helped produce dozens of professional players, including MLS standouts, while serving on NCAA and United Soccer Coaches committees that shape the sport’s direction.
