The United States has been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup following a 4-1 loss in the Round of 16 to Belgium in Seattle. You could play mad libs with that sentence about every World Cup appearance since 1990.
This one was supposed to be different. The "golden generation" was in their prime, the games were at home, the crowds were electric, but it wasn't enough. A lot can be said about what this means outside of the 90 minutes that took place, but that's for another time.
From the opening whistle, Belgium had a clear mental edge on the United States. The Americans were timid and unsure on the ball, and the Belgians were all to eager to pounce. This resulted in a 9th minute tap-in from Charles De Ketelaere after a series of individual errors by multiple American defenders.
However, things would settle slightly, and in the 31st minute, just as he had done against Bosnia in the Round of 32, Malik Tillman brought Americans to their feet with a direct free kick equalizer against the run of play that looked like it could turn the game on its head.
Less than two minutes later, De Ketelaere practically jumped over Tim Ream to claim a cross from Leandro Trossard to give Belgium the lead right back and emphatically silence the Seattle crowd.
From there, and truthfully for much of the early part of the second half, the Americans were much better, and were finding spaces and opportunities to attack.
Then in the 57th minute, Hans Vanaken practically put the game to bed after a truly comical error from goalkeeper Matt Freese 25 yards from his own box. The game from there belonged to the Belgians, and Romelu Lukaku rubber-stamped it in the 93rd minute to make absolutely sure.
Absolutely dumbfounding. That's the only phrase that can be conjured to describe the American performance on Monday. A team who had played with determination, skill and electricity showed absolutely none of that in Seattle.
The United States was awarded the hosting rights to the 1994 FIFA World Cup on July 4th, 1988. Everything that US Soccer had been doing in the 38 years since that day was building towards July 6th, 2026. This was supposed to be a watershed moment that finally brought soccer into the mainstream conscious for good, beyond a 6-week long tournament held every four years.
It wasn't.
Over the coming days and weeks, justified criticism will be lobbed at players, coaches and administrators. The performances the team put in before this game cannot be ignored, and the sport is still truly trending upwards in this country. But for many, this was just supposed to be different.
The narrative was there. 12 years after heartbreak in Brazil against many of these same Belgian players, everything was there for the taking.
No one grasped at it.
The United States took a gut punch and now knows it is exactly as far away from joining the world's footballing elite as it has been since reaching the quarterfinal in 2002.
