SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Spokane Velocity FC opened their Prinx Tires USL Cup campaign with a challenging road test on Saturday, falling 4-0 to last year’s finalists, Sacramento Republic FC. Despite flashes of offensive promise and a strong start, individual mistakes in transition allowed the hosts to pull away.

“We were very poor in transition with too many individual mistakes that hurt us,” said Velocity FC head coach Leigh Veidman. “When you make those mistakes against a team like Sacramento, you get punished and that’s exactly what happened tonight.”

A Fast Start Met by a Faster Counter

Spokane looked bright in the opening minutes at Heart Health Park. In just the third minute, defender Moses Mensah earned a free kick on the edge of the box after a deflection. Joe Gallardo’s resulting strike forced an early save from Sacramento’s Danny Vitiello, setting an aggressive tone for the visitors.

However, the momentum shifted just two minutes later. Sacramento launched a deadly counterattack as Arturo Rodriguez played a perfectly weighted ball over the Spokane defense to Tyler Wolff. The former Atlanta United man, making his Republic debut, tucked the ball away in the 5th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Spokane’s best chance to level came in the 39th minute when Mensah found forward Shavon John-Brown with a looped cross, but the Grenadian international’s effort was fired directly into the chest of Vitiello. Sacramento doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time when substitute Mayele Malango capitalized on another long-ball counter to make it 2-0 at the break.

Second Half Resilience and Key Returns

The back-and-forth nature of the match continued into the second half, but Sacramento remained clinical. Malango netted his second of the night in the 56th minute to extend the lead to 3-0.

Hoping to spark a comeback, Veidman turned to his bench in the 62nd minute, introducing forward Anuar Pelaez alongside midfielders Bryce Meredith and Luis Gil. The substitutions marked two significant returns for the club:

  • Bryce Meredith: Made his season debut after recovering from a pre-season injury.

  • Luis Gil: The club captain saw his first action since March 27 following paternity leave.

"It felt really good to be back out competing with the team," Meredith said. "It was an unfortunate result, but it gives us a lot to learn from going forward."

Spokane also handed a debut to center back Ibrahim Janis Covi in the 79th minute, but the result was put out of reach shortly after when Michelle Benitez added a fourth for Sacramento.

Silver Linings and Statistical Output

While the scoreline favored the home side, Spokane proved they could compete with USL Championship-level opposition. Velocity FC tallied 12 shots, four of which were on target. Midfielder Colin Fernandez was a notable standout, completing 31 of his 32 passes in his first start since mid-March.

"You could see tonight glimpses of who we can be, but we still have a lot of work to do," Veidman noted. "We’ve got to keep things in perspective that we’ve had just eight days of proper training with our full roster."
