As San Antonio FC continues preparations for the season ahead, much of the conversation this past week centered around the leadership of Head Coach Carlos Llamosa and the direction of the club moving forward.
In an interview this week, Ryan Glinski and Nathan Wangler spoke about the impact Llamosa has had since taking over the program and how his experience at the highest levels of the game is shaping the team’s identity.
Llamosa, who was appointed as the third head coach in club history ahead of the milestone 10th anniversary season, brought with him an extensive résumé that spans both elite-level playing and coaching experience.
Sporting Director Marco Ferruzzi described the hire as the beginning of a new era for the club, citing Llamosa’s “pedigree of winning and success” and his deep understanding of the professional pathway in the United States.
That championship mentality has been a focal point internally.
Llamosa brings 14 years of professional coaching experience, including time in Major League Soccer with Chivas USA, the New England Revolution and the Portland Timbers. During his tenure in Portland, he helped guide the Timbers to MLS Cup runner-up finishes and an MLS is Back Tournament championship. He also played a key role in the New York Cosmos’ undefeated home season and NASL Soccer Bowl Championship in 2013.
Before transitioning into coaching, Llamosa built an accomplished 18-year playing career. He made 181 MLS appearances, won two MLS Cups with D.C. United, earned MLS Best XI honors and collected 29 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team.
Now, that wealth of experience is influencing SAFC’s culture and expectations.
In this week’s discussion, Glinski and Wangler emphasized the standards being set daily — from training intensity to tactical preparation — as the club works to position itself among the league’s top sides.
Llamosa has previously expressed his excitement about building “a top team in the league” and
embracing the atmosphere created by SAFC supporters. That vision remains central as the club continues to build momentum.
With leadership aligned and expectations clear, San Antonio FC is focused on translating experience into results
— and, as Glinski and Wangler shared this week, the foundation under Llamosa is firmly in place.
Additional participating clubs will be announced in the coming weeks.
