LOS ANGELES — In a heart-pounding return from the international break, Angel City Football Club (ACFC) suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portland Thorns FC on Sunday afternoon at BMO Stadium. Despite a desperate late-game surge, a stoppage-time counter-attack from Portland ultimately sealed the result in front of a passionate Los Angeles crowd.

The match featured a tactical battle between two European-influenced managers: ACFC’s Alex Straus, formerly of Bayern Munich, and Portland’s Robert Vilahamn, who led Tottenham Hotspur before joining the NWSL.

Late Drama at BMO Stadium

The match remained deadlocked for much of the afternoon until Portland broke through in the 76th minute. Forward Pietra Tordin capitalized on a corner kick, heading home a nodded ball at the edge of the six-yard box to give the Thorns a 1-0 lead.

Angel City responded with relentless offensive pressure, but the game reached a fever pitch during eight minutes of stoppage time:

  • 90+5’: With Angel City committing numbers forward for a free-kick, Portland launched a lethal counter-attack. Forward Sophia Wilson clinicaly finished the break to double the Thorns' lead to 2-0.

  • 90+8’: Refusing to go quietly, ACFC forward Prisca Chilufya hammered home a one-timed volley off a cross from defender Emily Sams, bringing the score to 2-1 and providing a glimmer of hope.

However, the final whistle blew shortly after the restart, leaving Angel City just shy of a comeback. "We need to come out of these games winning," said Head Coach Alex Straus. "The mistakes were too big, and we need to minimize those areas."

Aggressive Offense and Key Returns

Angel City dominated the statistical battle in the first half, outshooting Portland 7-4. Defender Gisele Thompson nearly found the net in the 25th minute with a high strike that forced Thorns goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold into a fingertip save.

The afternoon also marked two significant roster milestones:

  • Taylor Suarez: The young forward made her first professional start, playing over 60 minutes and remaining a constant threat around the Portland box.

  • Jun Endo: The fan-favorite attacker made her highly anticipated season debut in the 63rd minute. Endo, currently on a minutes restriction as she recovers from injury, provided an immediate spark. "To see her out there, you can see the magic she brings is really special," noted captain Sarah Gorden.
