Norwegian Vikings Takedown Iraqi Challengers

Norway and Iraq look to make a big impact in their respective histories, as both teams ended long World Cup droughts. Iraq’s first and last World Cup before this year’s expanded team format was in 1986, while Norway hasn’t been on the world’s stage since 1998, and this is only their fourth World Cup appearance. These teams are in one of the strongest groups with France and Senegal.
It was a beautiful Tuesday night in Foxborough, Massachusetts, at Boston Stadium, and these two teams were ready to go. Iraq started with a 4-4-2 formation. Captain Jalal Hassan was the starting goalkeeper. In the back line of defense, Iraq had Hussein Ali at right back, Zaid Tahseen and Akam Hashem at center back, and Merchas Doski at left back. In the midfield, Iraq had Ibrahim Bayesh at right mid, Zaid Ismael and Amir Al-Ammari at center mid, and Ali Jasim at left mid. Iraq’s lead attack with the striking duo Ayman Hussein and Ali Al Hamadi.
Norway started with a 4-3-3 formation. Ørjan Håskjold Nyland was starting in goal. Norway’s back four started with Julian Ryerson at right back, Kristoffer Ajer and Torbjørn Heggem at center back, and David Møller Wolfe at left back. Norway’s midfield three were captain Martin Ødegaard, Sander Berge, and Fredrik Aursnes. In the attack, Norway had Alexander Sørloth on the right wing, Erling Haaland at striker, and Antonio Nusa on the left wing.
Norway and Iraq spent the first half attacking! Within the first five minutes, both teams had good chances that were cleared by the opponent's defense. In the 19th minute, Erling Haaland had a great chance off a beautifully centered corner kick, but headed the ball over the bar. Was this just World Cup debut nerves, or can Haaland show everybody who he truly is?
If there were any nerves, Haaland shut them down real quick in the 29th minute. Wolfe drove in a beautiful driven pass with Haaland sliding in and tapping home his first World Cup goal and the first goal of the game.
Ten minutes later, Iraq came back with a goal of their own, crossing in a beautifully floated pass straight to the head of Ayman Hussein, who knocked the ball into the bottom-right corner.
After the restart, and only 4 minutes later, Iraq fans put their heads in their hands as goalkeeper Hassan tried to clear the ball, only to punt it into the attacking leg of the one and only Haaland. Iraq had a few more chances, but the half ended 2-1 in Norway's favor.
Norway led the possession in the first half, 60% to 40%. Iraq did have two more shots over Norway, but Norway led shots on target 3 to 1. Norway also led the way in accuracy, with 87% of their passes finding their target compared to Iraq’s 77%.
As the second half began, Iraq looked to improve its defense and shift to a more attacking approach, while Norway looked to maintain the pressure it has put on Iraq thus far.
In the 75th minute, the game came back alive as a corner kick from Captain Odegaard sparked Norway's attack. Ostigard was the lone man unmarked, pounding a header past the Iraqi goalkeeper. That goal meant Norway led 3-1, and the game was surely over.
In the 83rd minute, Haaland had a chance to get the first hack trick of this World Cup tournament with another sneaky interception of a passback to the goalkeeper. But this time, the goalkeeper Hassan got low enough to ensure the striker's attack was stopped.
When the game seemed all but over, and everyone was relaxed, the 96th minute bleeding over the five extra minutes given saw the ball head to Haaland again. He headed a ball across the goal, but this time, the ball was inadvertently knocked into the net by Iraq striker Hussein.
Norway finished the game with 61% possession and only 2.52 expected goals while converting four goals of their total 12 shots. Five of them were on target compared to Iraq’s one shot on target out of their 11 total shots.
With the 4-1 victory, Norway sees itself at the top of the Group I table. Norway will take on Senegal in the next matchup, while Iraq will battle France. After today's performances, Senegal and Iraq both have steep hills to climb in their next matches. This group will surely come down to game three between Norway and France to determine who's the number one seed and number two seed going into the knockout rounds.
