Nashville SC continues Supporters Shield charge, dispatches Chicago Fire 3-0
Cross one off your 2026 MLS Bingo card if you had it, Nashville SC are the first club to clinch a playoff spot in MLS this season following a convincing 3-0 defeat of the Chicago Fire on Saturday at GEODIS Park.
After a three game road stretch in which the Coyotes collected just two points, and allowed the gap atop the Supporters Shield standings to shrink slightly, Nashville needed a victory back in the friendly confines of their home castle.
The game started as home games in the Music City typically have in 2026, with gold jerseys flying around the final third and creating chance after chance, though on this night the early blows would not result in a change to the scoresheet.
It would take until the 33rd minute when Matthew Corcoran clipped a ball into the box, which was headed across the face of goal by Reed Baker-Whiting for Sam Surridge to tap home for his 16th of the campaign. Nashville would continue to threaten for the remainder of the first half, but with nothing to show for it.
Coming out of the locker room, it was Chicago who appeared to have a better handle on the game, that is, until the game started to shift into the later stages. In the 78th minute, Andy Najar benefitted from a brilliant run by Cristian Espinoza to receive the ball in space on the edge of the box, and then he was able to pull back for Espinoza to curl into the far corner.
Then, of course with Nashville's two other Designated Players getting on the scoresheet, Hany Mukhtar made it three-for-three in the 87th as the Coyotes found themselves in a four-on-two breakaway that finished with a deft move and finish from Mukhtar to put the result beyond all doubt.
The win elevates Nashville to an unbelievable 12-1-0 at home this year, collecting a preposterous 37 of 39 available home points so far. Other results around the conference stretched the Coyotes' lead atop the East to 11 points with just eight games remaining, and it just seems like a matter of time before that top-seed is locked up.
Since the dual hires of BJ Callaghan and Gregg Berhalter in Nashville and Chicago respectively, these teams led by their former USMNT managers have met four times. Nashville has won three of those games, and the combined scoreline favors the league-leaders by an unreal 12-3.
As far as the Supporters Shield, Nashville currently holds 57 points and an eight point lead over second placed Vancouver, who also have a game in hand. The more this season plays out, it really feels like those two clubs are the class of the league this season. Miami will always have the top-end ability to beat anyone anywhere anytime, and other teams like New England, Houston, and St. Louis look incredibly dangerous, but Nashville and Vancouver have looked, at times, so dominant over their peers that it would almost be a shame if they didn't meet in MLS Cup Final at the end of this season.
