CHESTER, Pa. (March 1, 2026) – The Philadelphia Union dropped a tough 2-1 decision to New York City FC on Sunday night at Subaru Park, conceding a stoppage-time winner despite outshooting their Eastern Conference rivals 17-13.

New York City FC opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Hannes Wolf found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Union continued to press throughout the second half and were rewarded in the 89th minute. Midfielder Indiana Vassilev calmly converted from the penalty spot, notching Philadelphia’s first MLS goal of the season and leveling the match at 1-1.

However, the drama was far from over. After the Union were reduced to 10 men following Olwethu Makhanya’s second caution in the 90+2’ minute, NYCFC capitalized deep into stoppage time. Tayvon Gray connected in the 90+9’ minute off assists from Agustín Ojeda and Talles Magno to secure the 2-1 victory for New York.

Despite the setback, Philadelphia generated consistent attacking pressure, holding a 17-13 advantage in shots on the night.

The Union (0-1-0) will return to Subaru Park on Saturday, March 7 to host the San Jose Earthquakes. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Apple TV.
