The Michigan soccer community is mourning the loss of Matthew Thomas Boersma, a respected coach, mentor, and advocate for the game, who passed away on January 11, 2026, at the age of 52.

Born on March 14, 1973, Boersma left a lasting impact on soccer in the Lansing area and across the state of Michigan through his work with Lansing Rush, Michigan Jaguars FC, and his instrumental involvement in advancing high school soccer coverage statewide.

Beyond his work on the field, Boersma played a key role in helping launch the MIHSSCA High School Soccer Ranking Show on the Michigan Soccer Network (MSN), which has since grown into the National Soccer Network (NSN). His insight, credibility, and passion for high school soccer were critical in building the foundation of the show and strengthening its connection to the Michigan high school soccer community.

Jonathan Turner, founder of the Michigan Soccer Network and National Soccer Network, reflected on Boersma’s impact:

“It was truly an honor to know Matt. He played an instrumental role in helping MSN and MIHSSCA build a strong high school presence across the state of Michigan. His belief in what we were building and his willingness to lend his voice and expertise meant more than he probably ever knew.”

As a coach, Boersma was widely admired for prioritizing relationships and personal growth over wins and losses. He was deeply respected within the game, but even more so for the genuine care he showed his players and the way he helped them develop a true love for soccer. Many athletes and families credit him with shaping not only their development on the field, but their confidence and character away from it.

Michigan Jaguars FC released a statement honoring Boersma’s legacy, noting that his passion, leadership, and kindness will be greatly missed throughout the club and the broader soccer community.

As the Lansing and Michigan soccer communities continue to reflect on his life, the impact of Matt Boersma will live on through the players he mentored, the programs he helped grow, and the relationships he built through the game he loved.

Thoughts and prayers remain with his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
