Allegan, Almont, Warren Regina and Grand Rapids Catholic Central have never won a state championship in girls soccer...one of them will be crowned this weekend
ALLEGAN, Mich. – Allegan is starting to believe in the theory regarding it’s not about how you start, but how you finish.
Allegan began the season 1-4-0 overall, was outscored 11-2 and shut out three times in that time span in late March and early April. The Tigers were not ranked in the top 15 this season, and could only muster an honorable mention listing towards the end of the regular season in the MIHSSCA polls.
Perhaps these Tigers didn’t get the memo about not being ranked but still remaining in the postseason field – as they are one of four teams still standing at this stage.
Allegan defeated Grand Rapids Covenant Christian 2-1 last Friday night in the Division 3 regional finals – claiming the school’s first regional title in program history.
In what has been known as veteran coach Paul Legge’s final season at the helm of the program, the Tigers are soaring to new heights.
Over the last 16 games, Allegan has posted a 15-1-0 overall record. The only loss was the defacto Southwestern Athletic Conference-Valley Division title-game where the Tigers dropped a 3-0 decision to 10-time Division 4 state finalist Kalamazoo Christian (7-0-0 in league play). That loss was on April 30 Allegan ended up going 6-1-0 in league play and finishing a game behind longtime powerhouse Kalamazoo Christian – a team in the Division 4 Final Four.
During that 16-game stretch, the Tigers have posted a 62-10 scoring edge with nine shutouts.
Allegan has also won 11 straight games overall since that late-April setback to Kalamazoo Christian, posting seven clean sheets and outscoring the opposition 45-5 in this 11-game stretch.
In its regional finals win last week, Ireland Ashley and Alyssa Macherzak scored the goals and Mya Corbett earned the win in goal behind some steady defense. In four postseason games, the Tigers have a 9-3 edge on the scoreboard, including a district finals win over Hopkins (3-2) in a game that reached overtime and a shootout.
Overall this season, Allegan is 16-5-0 with a 64-21 scoring edge and 10 shutouts. But the Tigers are also in the nFinal Four for the first time and alive in a field where none of the state semifinalists have ever won a state championship in girls soccer.
Both Allegan and Almont are making their first Final Four appearance, while Warren Regina is making its fifth and Grand Rapids Catholic Central its third appearance in this stage.
Allegan will face off with host Grand Rapids Catholic Central at 6 p.m. Tuesday night in the state semifinals with the right of advancing to Friday’s D-3 state finals at Michigan State University on the line.
