Miami United Slips Past SCU Heat in UPSL National Quarterfinal

Weather Delays, Curfews, and Penalty Kicks Highlight This Weird UPSL Regional Final
A warm, sunny afternoon welcomed both teams to the field in the USPL Premier South Region Final held Saturday afternoon at MOBA Stadium in Peachtree City, Georgia. The Florida champion Miami United faced the Mid-Atlantic champion South Carolina United Heat with a trip to the UPSL National Final Four on the line. A stormy evening and 4.5 hours would be needed to separate the two teams in a very weird UPSL South Region Final.
Two goals (one early, one late), a lengthy weather delay, a city curfew, and some goalkeeper heroics in the penalty shootout see Miami United advance to the UPSL Premier National Semifinals 1-1 (6-5 in Penalties).
The first look of the match fell to Miami United in the third minute as a quick build up produced a shot that just soared over the bar. Miami United had the better of play in the early minutes and the early warnings turned into a goal in the ninth minute.
Miami’s Peterson Revange went on a long solo dribble from the midfield driving into the Heat area before shooting the ball off the left post. The rebound rolled directly to the feet of Miami’s Sony Norde who fired the ball low into the nets before the Heat defense could get reorganized for the 1-0 Miami lead.
Revange was on the ball again in the 10th minute and tried to chip the Heat keeper from midfield, forcing a scrambled last-minute touch just over the bar to keep the ball out of the Heat net.
The first quarter hour of the match repeated this pattern as Miami United attacked almost at will with the Heat pinned deep in their end defending. The next phase of the match saw both teams unable to create any attacks while the game slowed down to become more of a midfield struggle for possession. The Heat emerged from this midfield duel with the better of play late in the half creating some chances from a free kick in the 40th minute and then a cross from the left flank in the 45th minute. But neither moment produced the equalizer. Revange went on one final solo dribble for Miami as the half ended 1-0 to Miami United but clearly with the momentum of the match shifting to the SCU Heat.
During the halftime break a line of storms entered the region and forced a 90-minute weather delay. As both teams returned to the rainy field after the lengthy delay, they were quickly interrupted again in the 50th minute by another weather system that would require a second long weather delay of 40 minutes. Finally, the storms cleared and the teams resumed play almost 3.5 hours after the opening kickoff of the match.
The Heat returned to the rainy, wet field turf with more energy and the better of play during long stretches of the second half. What was lacking in the Heat attack was the final ball into their forwards as they were unable to turn all their positive attack into the game-tying goal.
In the 66th minute there were shouts for a handball after a Miami United defender blocked a shot but no penalty was given as the defected shot floated harmlessly to the Miami goalkeeper. A corner kick in the 69th minute produced a wild Heat shot at the near post but posed no danger to the Miami keeper.
Miami had some half-hearted looks at scoring a second goal in the 70th minute off a corner kick, the 75th minute off a free kick, and the 76th minute off another corner kick but Miami looked to be using the set pieces to bleed the clock rather than pressing for a second goal. Miami was quick to foul on any of the Heat counter attacking moments and just looked to take the air out of the ball and the game over the final minutes of the match.
The Heat kept turning up their pressure looking for the equalizer and came close to creating something in the 83rd minute as a cross took a wild deflection for a corner kick. The Heat for all their effort were rewarded in the 90th minute as they finally cracked the Miami defensive code and scored the equalizer.
A ball was served deep into the box from the left touch line where Kazuma Izhizuka outmuscled the Miami defender on a contested header to power the ball past the Miami keeper to knot things 1-1. Miami had one final shot just wide of the far post deep into stoppage time and the match looked to be headed to extra time. As the final whistle sounded just minutes later, the match took another odd turn due to the earlier weather delays and the strict local curfew now looming just minutes ahead at 10:15 PM.
The UPSL decision to skip extra time and go straight to penalties was forced upon the teams by the weather and the curfew and had a major impact on the match. The Heat had dominated play after the long weather delay and had all the momentum in the second half as Miami had gone into a defensive shell just trying to survive to full time. The Heat had already navigated a long weather delay in the UPSL National tournament a few weeks ago as they defeated Los Toros in extra time and this decision to go straight to penalties really helped the now fatigued Miami United side.
The first five rounds of penalty kicks were all converted despite the goalkeepers getting close on a few occasions. With things knotted 5 to 5, the Heat’s sixth kick was saved by Miami’s Franco Acerbi who dove to his lower right side getting a strong hand on the shot to turn it away from the nets. Miami had a chance to win the shootout with the next kick, but a classic over-strike sent the ball sailing high over the bar keeping things tied at 5. The Heat’s seventh kick was saved by Acerbi diving this time to his lower left side and Miami’s keeper after making the save, grabbed the ball looking to convert his spot kick for the Miami win. Acerbi had no mistake firing the ball into the lower corner of the net to win the shootout 6-5 and send Miami United to the USPL National Semifinals being played at UCLA on August 7.
The Heat end their Spring 2026 campaign in heartbreaking fashion in the shootout loss and finish with an undefeated 14W-0L-3T record and a +43-goal differential in their amazing spring campaign. Miami United (13W-1L-2T) will face the defending UPSL National Champs the New York Renegades in their upcoming semifinal.
