The Michigan High School Athletic Association has approved an expansion of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for student-athletes at member schools.
The new policy is effective immediately and allows greater flexibility for individual athletes to participate in personal branding activities.
Previously, the MHSAA permitted limited NIL-related opportunities, including conducting camps, clinics and private lessons. Under the expanded policy, student-athletes may pursue additional individual branding opportunities, provided they are offered on a one-to-one basis and not tied to team participation.
To protect competitive equity, the policy continues to prohibit group-based NIL activities such as collectives or pay-for-play arrangements commonly seen at the collegiate level.
The MHSAA Council reviewed the rule changes after extensive discussion with member schools over the past three years. The decision also followed a 2023 proposal by the Michigan Legislature addressing NIL rights for high school athletes, as well as similar policy changes in neighboring states.
Personal branding activities connected to products, services or industries deemed inappropriate or inconsistent with interscholastic athletics values remain prohibited. These include gaming, gambling, alcoholic beverages and banned substances.

All NIL activities must be disclosed to the MHSAA within seven days of an opportunity or contract for review and approval. Individual schools may adopt stricter policies if they choose.
