We’re here!! I still remember in 2002 when we were watching games at 2 am. I thought it was just the greatest time. Welcome to North America! The game lives here.

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener, hosts Mexico won 2-0 over South Africa, but I can’t help but feel disappointed in this result. It felt Mexico was the superior team from the jump, but didn’t take enough shots on goal to assert dominance.

Raul Jimenez had a shot blocked within the first ten minutes, and it never felt like RSA was comfortable from there. Terrible defending and a giveaway in the back led to Mexico’s first goal; Julian Quiñones’ strike between the keeper’s leg put El Tri up 1-0 and they never looked back. Mexico had plenty of chances but weren’t able to capitalize until Raul Jimenez’ goal in the second half. A beautifully crossed ball by Roberto Alvarado from the right-hand side found the back of the net courtesy of the Jimenez header at the back post.

Three red cards were dealt out this game, most notably Mexico’s Cesar Montes, who’s one of Mexicos best defenders. It’ll be interesting to see what Javier Aguirre changes going into game 2.

As a Mexico fan, I’m disappointed with this result. Mexico’s eventual downfall will be lack of firepower. Gimenez was non-existent, but it’s encouraging to see Quiñones get warmed up.

For South Africa, yes it’s a loss but they hung in there and prevented a blowout. I’d be super encouraged if I was them. Yes they looked lost, but they limited the damage. It is possible 3 teams get through in this group.

Team Ratings/Analysis -

Mexico: Mexico wasn’t able to get enough shots on goal, which historically, has always been their Achilles heel. Julian Quiñones looked phenomenal in this game, and his development could really make Mexico’s attack dynamic for once. I’m happy for Raul Jimenez, who placed a ferociously headed ball in the back of the net. Heading into this tournament, I was curious if Raul would be able to provide goals. Early indications seem promising. And what a great emotional reaction by Jimenez, who lost his father prior to the World Cup. Overall, Mexico was able to control the game and a 2-0 victory in a World Cup opener is something we should be happy about.

Rating: B+

South Africa: For the first 10 minutes, it felt like South Africa could’ve been down by 2 already. Super sloppy play on the goal given up was kind of a theme throughout the match. One bright spot for RSA was definitely their GK. Robert Williams came up huge in spots and really prevented this game from entering blowout status. As a Mexico fan, I find it hard to agree with the second red card, which was sent to VAR for an intentional knock to the face by Themba Zwane. I didn’t see any malintent, but what do I know? South Africa should feel lucky they only lost by 2. If they tighten up the back line, this side could surprise some of the other teams in this group.

Rating: C-
