OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Behind a 7-3 run in the second half Saturday, the Milwaukee Wave was able to extend its season for at least another day.
The Wave’s grand reward? They earned a Sunday night date with two-time defending Major Arena Soccer League champion and top-seeded Chihuahua Savage.
Fifth-seeded Milwaukee earned such a date with an 11-7 victory Saturday night over fourth-seeded Kansas City Comets in the MASL Ron Newman Cup Playoffs quarterfinals at Frontwave Arena.
All postseason games are being played at Frontwave just outside of San Diego, California.
Milwaukee stormed back from an early 3-1 first-half deficit to earn a 4-4 tie at the break. After being tied at 5-5 in the third quarter, Franck Tayou put the Wave (15-8-2) up 6-5 at the 10:05 mark of the third quarter which also kickstarted a 4-0 run to open up a 9-5 advantage.
The entire run spanned of 14:07 of game clock with the fourth goal during the spurt was scored by Ian Bennett. That tally coming at the 9:12 mark of the fourth quarter and put Milwaukee up 9-5.
Both teams scored twice down the stretch, but the Kansas City Comets (15-7-2) could not generate enough offense in the final minutes to make a comeback.
Bennett finished with four goals to pace Milwaukee. Alex Steinwascher added two goals and an assist, Ricardo Carvaiho and Alex Sanchez both added a goal and two assists apiece, while Derek Huffman and Tayou also scored single goals for the Wave.
Kansas City built a 3-1 lead by the 10:53 mark of the second quarter but couldn’t create enough distance to pull away.
Loucas Sousa, Stefan Mijatovic and Kyle Creig staked the comets to the 3-1 lead.
Stefan Mijatovic led the Comets with a goal and three assists. Sousa finished with two goals, while Junior Kazeem, Guerrero Pino and Ramone Palmer also scored for Kansas City.
The Milwaukee Wave held a 29-27 shots edge in the contest, including 21-17 with shots on goal.
Nicolau Neto gained the win in goal with 10 saves, while teammate Phillip Ejimadu finished off the final couple of minutes in goal to preserve the victory.
