INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Even league leaders can show vulnerability from time to time.
The Kansas City Comets handed the Major Arena Soccer League’s top team just its second loss of the season Sunday, tripping up the Chihuahua Savage 5-2 in front of 5,194 fans at Cable Dahmer Arena.
The contest was the rematch of last season’s Ron Newman Cup Finals.
Fifth-place Kansas City (6-1-2) scored three unanswered goals, one in the third and two in the fourth quarter to shock the Savage (9-2-0).
Tied 2-2 in the third quarter following a goal from Chihuahua’s Jorge Rios at the 6:14 mark, the Comets exploded after that point.
Kansas City’s Chad Vandegriffe netted the go-ahead goal at 13:26 of the third stanza, while he booted home another tally at the 9:15 mark of the fourth period. Both goals were assisted by Zach Reget.
Lesia Thetsane netted an unassisted insurance goal at 11:29 of the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Kansas City never trailed in the match, going up 1-0 at the 12:49 mark of the first quarter courtesy of a Nathan Durdle goal and a Phillip Ejimadu helper.
The Savage tied the game at 13:46 of the first period when Roberto Escalante finished off a pass from Jorge Rios.
Reget put the Comets up 2-1 at the 13:00 point of the second quarter to help Kansas City gain a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Ejimadu finished with 19 saves in 21 chances in goal for Kansas City. Christian Hernadez recorded 16 saves for Chihuahua.
