OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The Kansas City Comets are headed back to the postseason. Following a high-stakes, cross-country home-and-home series against the league-leading San Diego Sockers, the Comets officially clinched a spot in the Ron Newman Cup Playoffs with a wire-to-wire 8-6 victory at Frontwave Arena on Sunday evening.

The win secures the Comets’ 10th playoff appearance since 2015 and caps off a vital four-point weekend. After earning a single point in an overtime heartbreaker at home on Saturday, Kansas City responded with a dominant offensive performance in California to leapfrog into fourth place in the MASL standings.

"Coming into this week against the top team in the league was a daunting task," Comets officials said. "To take four out of six points and secure our playoff life shows the resilience of this group. We didn’t just survive the weekend; we made a statement."

The Comets’ attack was spearheaded by Rian Marques, whose five-point performance (three goals, two assists) catapulted him back to the top of the MASL scoring charts with 44 points on the season. Marques opened the scoring in the first quarter after forcing a turnover, followed quickly by a Zach Reget goal to give the visitors an early 2-0 cushion.

While the Sockers managed to keep pace early, Kansas City broke the game open in the third period by being clinical on the power play. DeBray Hollimon netted his first goal of the season before Marques and Nacho Flores both capitalized on man-advantage opportunities, extending the Comets' lead to a commanding 7-2.

The Sockers attempted a late comeback using a sixth attacker, narrowing a five-goal deficit to just two in the final minutes. However, a top-corner restart goal from Marques—completing his fifth hat trick of the year—ensured the Sockers' late surge was too little, too late for the 3,002 fans in attendance.

Defensively, the Comets weathered a barrage of 31 shots from San Diego, relying on 11 blocked shots and a disciplined penalty kill early in the second frame. The victory is particularly impressive given it came against a San Diego defense led by former Comet Boris Pardo, who entered the match as one of the league’s statistical leaders in goals-against average.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Comets (11-6-4) now sit just three points shy of a top-two spot, which would afford them a crucial first-round playoff bye. The team returns home to Cable Dahmer Arena next Saturday, March 21, for a classic rivalry matchup against the Baltimore Blast on "Mascot Night."
