SACREMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento Republic FC is moving onward.
In Republic FC’s opening match of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Indomitable Club secured its place in the Round of 32 with a 1-0 win over El Farolito on Wednesday night at Heart Health Park.
The victory marked Sacramento’s 24th tournament win in front of the home crowd – the most by any club since the team’s inaugural season in 2014 – and extended their streak to 10 consecutive opening-round wins.
Captain Rodrigo Lopez, making his first start of the year, tallied his 12th career Open Cup assist in the first half. The veteran midfielder delivered a pinpoint cross in the 30th minute, setting up forward Sebastian Herrera for a powerful header that proved to be the match-winner. It was Herrera’s fifth goal in Open Cup play over the last three seasons.
Republic FC came out strong, controlling over 60 percent of possession in the opening 15 minutes. Their first quality chance came in the 27th minute, when Lopez pounced on a defensive miscue and fired a shot on target, only to be denied by El Farolito goalkeeper Kevin Gonzales.
Goalkeeper Jared Mazzola made his season debut and delivered a standout performance. In the 37th minute, he made an acrobatic stop to deny an El Farolito chance that skipped dangerously through the box. Mazzola finished the night with three saves, helping Sacramento earn its first clean sheet of the year.
The Indomitable Club won’t have to wait long to find out its next opponent. U.S. Soccer will host the Round of 32 draw live on CBS Sports Golazo Network tomorrow morning at 6:15 a.m. PT, determining matchups and host venues for the next two rounds.
Republic FC now turns its attention back to league play, wrapping up a demanding stretch of three matches in eight days with a road trip to face Phoenix Rising FC this Saturday. Kickoff from Phoenix Rising Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
