COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks advanced to the Round of 32 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 3-2 win over One Knoxville SC on Wednesday night at Weidner Field.
One Knoxville struck first with a goal in the 2nd minute. Jaheim Brown delivered a cross from the center line to Babacar Diene, who carried it into the right side of the box and sent it past the goalkeeper.
Colorado Springs responded with urgency, dominating possession in the first half with 64.7 percent, completing 204 accurate passes and registering two shots on target.
The Switchbacks found the equalizer early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Marco Micaletto sent a corner kick into a crowded box. After the ball deflected off a Knoxville defender, Stevie Echevarria gained control and slotted it into the bottom-left corner to tie the match at 1-1.
In the 81st minute, Akeem Ward linked up with Micaletto, who weaved past a defender and connected with Anthony Fontana. Fontana returned the pass to Micaletto, who finished the play to give the Switchbacks a 2-1 lead.
Just two minutes later, Knoxville responded. Brown threw the ball in from the left sideline, and a teammate headed it toward Stauros Zarokostas, who volleyed it into the top-left corner to level the match at 2–2.
The game headed to extra time, and in the 104th minute, Yosuke Hanya drove toward goal before laying it off to Fontana, who buried the match-winner for Colorado Springs.
Knoxville’s comeback hopes were further dashed in the 120th minute when Zarokostas received his second yellow card, resulting in a red and leaving his team down a man for the final minutes.
The Switchbacks return to action at home on April 19, hosting El Paso Locomotive on Jersey Reveal Night.
