HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – In Detroit City Football Club’s 10th international friendly in club history, the Le Rouge did not have any answers Wednesday.
Liga MX side Santos Laguna posted a 1-0 victory over DCFC in a non-USL game played at Keyworth Stadium.
A goal off a deflection in the 42nd minute proved to be the difference in this one, as DCFC could not sustain much momentum and collect very many quality scoring chances throughout 90-plus minutes.
Santos Laguna had a counterattack opportunity in the 40th minute, as they found some holes in the Detroit backline. A cross across the six-yard box saw Santos have a certain goal, but DCFC goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva made an incredible diving save to rob the visitors in the 40th minute.
Santos Laguna would take the lead two minutes later, as a Hector Gonzales shot would deflect off a diving Mkuruva and into the back of the net, giving Santos a lead three minutes before the half.
The defensive battle rarely generated any great scoring chances for each side during the first 30 minutes before Santos Laguna put together the late first-half push that resulted in the game’s only goal.
DCFC, which went deep into its bench in this game to try to ignite some offense, had its best chance in the 51st minute when Sebastián Guenzatti took a curving shot from just inside the box clanked off the far post.
Detroit would again come close to an equalizer in the 89th minute as another shot from the top of the box would test the Santos goalkeeper, but it wouldn’t find the back of the net.
Detroit City falls to 2-3-0 against Liga MX sides and are 4-1-5 all-time in international friendlies.
Detroit heads out on the road this weekend for a USL Jägermeister Cup match at Hartford Athletic. Detroit City returns to Keyworth on July 12 to face Hartford Athletic at 7 pm. Tickets for all Detroit City matches are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
