One point is all that was needed to cement a playoff spot for Hickory FC. Instead, they will have to fight on the final match day to avoid elimination.

Seeking to redeem themselves against their foes from the mountain, Hickory started off the match well early, a few corner kick opportunities and forward James Lane with 2 shot attempts right in front of the net, but to no avail. Hickory played up to their usual tempo and style, maintaining possession of the ball and constantly applying pressure for the attack. Despite this, Appalachian FC had seemingly scored first with a goal in the 20th minute off of a header from a cross into the box; however, this was pulled back due to offsides.

Hickory continued to generate offense, with new signing Amare Lucas attempting a bicycle kick that was shot over the bar. Appalachian FC momentarily took control of the match, building up in Hickory’s half and earning a free kick in the 31st minute that was shot off the crossbar.

Hickory would respond, after blocking another App FC free kick, Hickory moved on the counter attack, with Amare Lucas delivering a beautiful through ball to the midfielder Mario Albert who slid the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. A 2nd was nearly scored off of a James Lane dribble into the box, but was ultimately collected by App's keeper to close out the 1st half.

Hickory would start the 2nd half the same way they ended the first, creating opportunities and applying pressure onto App FC's defense, with left back Alvaro Bonet missing a header wide of the net and Amare Lucas with a shot off the dribble that was saved in the 56th minute. Minutes later, Mario Albert went for the brace, with a blast from just inside the box that went over the bar, and would've been his second goal of the night.

These missed opportunities would come back to bite Hickory, as right back Leo Souza picked up back to back yellows in the 62nd and 65th minute of the match, leaving the hosts down to 10 men for the final 25+ minutes of the match. Despite the ejection from the match, fans continued to pump energy into Moretz Stadium, with Hickory supporters firing up their own edition of the “Viking Row”, made popular by Norway’s fanbase in this year’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite these efforts, the visitors finally broke through, scoring the equalizer in the 73rd minute off of a corner that was volleyed in.

Hickory, even though a man down, continued to push and attempt to regain the lead. Most notably in the 85th minute, where a cross to forward Thomas Pollacchi was shot wide to the right of the net, in what was the final and best chance for the hosts, as in extra time, Appalachian FC heroics sealed the night.

After a cross towards the box, the ball was headed back across for a phenomenal bicycle kick goal into the top right corner of the net, securing the 3 points for App FC.

It was a must win night for the visitors, who will still need a bit of help to reach the playoffs, and now it has become a must win final matchday for Hickory FC against Asheville SC, who can jump into second place with a win on Sunday against NCFC U-23.
