RICHMOND, Va. — Continuing its mission to set the gold standard for youth soccer in the United States, the ECNL has officially announced its 2026-27 Coaching Professional Development (CPD) programming. The new curriculum, hosted in the ECNL Coach Education Center powered by Coaches’ Voice, features elite tactical insights and methodology from some of the world's most respected footballing minds.
The platform has become a cornerstone of the league’s culture. Last season alone, nearly 6,700 coaches from over 450 clubs engaged in more than 33,000 hours of development. Under league regulations, all ECNL and ECNL Regional League (RL) coaches are required to complete five CPD hours annually.
Core Modules: Excellence in Leadership and Methodology
The 2026-27 season focuses on three core pillars designed to refine how coaches think about the game and their players:
Club Identity & Vision: Zurab Amirian, Head of Coaching and Methodology at Feyenoord, shares a masterclass on establishing a clear club identity.
Gamification of Training: Renowned coach developer Russell Earnshaw explores innovative ways to gamify sessions to increase player engagement and retention.
Cognitive Science in Soccer: Doug Lemov, ECNL Methodology Advisor, returns with the second part of his series on "How Memory Works." Coaches will learn how to apply theories of encoding and retrieval to maximize the efficiency of every practice.
The "Counterattacking" Series: Practical Field Sessions
For the first time this cycle, the ECNL is introducing three practical sessions filmed exclusively for Coaches’ Voice, centered around the tactical theme of the counterattack:
Foundation Phase Mastery: Scott Allison (Norwich City) leads a series of three practices focused on transition speed.
Youth Development Phase: Wes Hughes (Wolves) demonstrates drills specifically designed to cultivate clinical counterattacking play.
Elite Preparation: Nathan Jones (Bournemouth U21s) provides a rare look at a match preparation session, teaching players how to transform a solid defensive block into an immediate offensive threat.
Tactical Masterclasses: Breaking Lines and Pressing
To round out the nine new learning resources, the ECNL has tapped Pro Licence coaches to break down the nuances of high-level tactics:
Breaking Lines: Luke Benstead discusses the technical qualities and tactical principles required to penetrate defensive blocks.
Defensive Pressing: Chelsea Academy coach Ed Brand dissects the essential principles of an effective press.
Tactics Board Insights: Gary O’Neil (formerly of Racing Strasbourg) utilizes the tactics board to explain his fundamental philosophies for play both in and out of possession.
The Impact of the Coach Education Center
"Every coach, every club, and every hour has contributed to building a smarter, more consistent coaching culture across the ECNL, ECNL Regional League, and Pre-ECNL." — ECNL Statement
The ECNL Coach Education Center represents a groundbreaking shift in youth sports, providing a professional-grade digital environment that ensures American youth players are being developed by coaches who have access to the same resources as Europe's top academies.
Coaches can begin accessing the new 2026-27 modules immediately via the official ECNL Coach Education Center.
