SAN JOSE, Calif. — Malik Tillman scored twice and Diego Luna contributed two assists as the U.S. Men’s National Team snapped a four‑game losing streak with a dominant 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in their 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup opener at PayPal Park.
The game was the Group D opener for the United States.
The U.S. snapped a four-game losing streak over the last couple of months where they were outscored 9-2, including a 4-0 whitewash by Switzerland June 10 where the USMNT conceded four first half goals – all in the first 36 minutes of play.
Over the previous 10 international matches, the USMNT was only 5-5 with a 15-14 scoring edge. The U.S. had its best overall production in quite some time on Sunday.
The last time the U.S. scored five goals in a game was June 10, 2022 – three years and five days ago. The U.S. posted a 5-0 thrashing of Grenada in the CONCACAF Nations League, where Jesús Ferreira scored four goals and Paul Arriola added one the other.
The U.S. also posted a 6-0 shutout over Trinidad and Tobago on June 22, 2019 where six different players scored goals.
This time around, the USMNT took off from the beginning. The side outshot Trinidad and Tobago 21-3 overall, including 11-2 with shots on goal, and even held possession for 70 percent of the match.
Tillman opened the scoring in the 16th minute, converting a cross from Jack McGlynn. He doubled the lead in the 41st, intercepting a back pass and slotting home his second tally of the day. It marked the first two international goals for Tillman.
Patrick Agyemang added a third goal before halftime, deflecting a Luna strike in the 44th minute. Luna finished the half with two assists, sparking the U.S. offense.
In the second half, substitutes Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright each found the net in the 82nd and 84th minutes to seal the rout.
Matt Freese made two saves in goal, preserving the clean sheet for the U.S., who were missing several starters for various reasons.
Young legs and bright performances — particularly from Tillman and Luna — underscored a fresh depth in the squad under coach Mauricio Pochettino, who coached his 11th international match with the U.S.
The U.S. will next face Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas, on June 19. Trinidad and Tobago meet Haiti in Arlington, Texas, on the same day.
