RENTON, Wash. — Exactly one year and one day after a devastating ACL injury ended his 2025 campaign, Paul Arriola completed a storybook return to the continental stage. The veteran midfielder scored twice in his first start of the season to lead the Seattle Sounders to a 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 series on Thursday night at BC Place.

The victory gives the two-time Champions Cup winners a massive advantage—including three critical away goals—heading into the return leg. Arriola’s performance was a milestone for the U.S. international, who lay clutching his knee in Mexico City during last year's tournament before embarking on an 11-month recovery journey.

"The storyline of the day is Paul Arriola," said Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer. "It’s a year and a day since he did his ACL. It’s not just the goals—it was his savvy play and smart defending. He had a really, really good performance and helped us tremendously in this game."

The deadlock was broken in the 45th minute when Jesús Ferreira pounced on a mishit back-pass from Vancouver’s Mathías Laborda. Ferreira, who leads the team with four assists in all competitions this year, drew out goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka before unselfishly squaring the ball to Arriola for a clinical one-timed finish.

Arriola doubled the advantage in the 58th minute following a counterattack led by rookie Kalani Kossa-Rienzi. Kossa-Rienzi’s low cross deflected off a defender and Takaoka before Arriola bundled it home at the back post. Despite a brief video review for a possible offside, the goal stood, silencing the home crowd of 12,446.

Vancouver’s frustration mounted as they struggled to penetrate a disciplined Seattle backline. Thomas Müller, the legendary German international, nearly clawed one back in stoppage time, but his powerful half-volley rattled the crossbar. It was one of several missed opportunities for a Vancouver side that had entered the match unbeaten in 2026.

Seattle put the match out of reach in the 70th minute through substitute Paul Rothrock. Only eight minutes after replacing Arriola, Rothrock was in the right place to capitalize on a deflected through-ball from Cristian Roldan that skipped past Danny Musovski, tapping in Seattle’s third of the night.

Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei, making his first appearance of the 2026 season, was instrumental in maintaining the clean sheet. His diving save in the 69th minute to deny a Mathías Laborda header preserved the three-goal cushion. The result marked Vancouver's first loss of the campaign after a 4-0-1 start.

The series now shifts to ONE Spokane Stadium in Spokane, Washington, for Leg 2 next Wednesday, March 18. Due to Lumen Field undergoing preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Sounders will host the deciding match in Eastern Washington needing only to avoid a three-goal collapse to advance to the quarterfinals.
